Box Score WISE, Va. – UVa-Wise volleyball earned its second-consecutive 3-2 Mountain East Conference home win Friday night inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center by defeating the University of Charleston. Once again, the Cavaliers (8-22, 6-7 MEC) won the match in exciting fashion, taking the fifth set after the Golden Eagles (23-10, 11-2 MEC) came back from a two-set deficit.
Senior outside hitter
Karley Allen (Lanexa, Va.) tied the UVa-Wise program record for all-time kills when she recorded her 17th kill of the match in the fifth set. Helping the Cavs upend the second-best team in the MEC, Allen's 1,574th career kill clinched the match at 15-12 in the final set. Leading 11-10 in the fifth, the Cavs scored three-straight points to go up 14-10 after an Allen kill and two Golden Eagle errors. Charleston made it 14-12 after winning the next two points on a kill and a service ace, before Allen's record-tying kill sealed the victory for UVa-Wise.
The Cavs played tough the first two sets of the match and looked to be focused on winning. UVa-Wise earned two 25-22 set wins to open up the match before Charleston began to show why they own the second-best record in the league. Down 16-12 in the third set, the Cavs put together four-straight points to tie up the score at 16-16 before the Golden Eagles claimed nine of the next 11 to win the set 25-18. UVa-Wise was forced to play catchup the entire fourth set as Charleston raced out to a nine-point 13-4 advantage. The Cavs battled their way back and remained within striking distance but couldn't get any closer than four points. The Golden Eagles took the fourth set by a score of 25-20 to force the winner take all fifth.
All told, UVa-Wise totaled 52 kills in the match off of an attack percentage of .155, but hit at a mark of .438 in the final set with only two attack errors. Defensively, the Cavs made seven total team blocks and registered 52 digs. Charleston collected 56 kills in the five sets as the Golden Eagles swung at .179 and posted nine service aces. Making nine total team blocks, Charleston earned 58 digs as a team.
Allen's 17 kills led the Cavs' attack as she posted a double-double with 10 digs. Freshman setter
Morgan Milligan (Bridgewater, Va.) also claimed a double-double with a match-high 41 assists and 14 digs. Senior middle blocker
Lindsey Tucker (Midlothian, Va.) and sophomore right side hitter
Amanda Auxier (Midlothian, Va.) each tallied nine kills for UVa-Wise, while senior outside hitter
Erin Anderson (Richmond, Va.) added seven kills and 10 digs. Senior middle blocker
Santana Bishop (Gate City, Va.) made a team-high four blocks and contributed six kills as Allen and Auxier each earned three blocks. Anderson and sophomore outside hitter
Kyra Jessee (Weber City, Va.) both chipped in two aces while senior libero
Erin Lee (Fincastle, Va.) solidified UVa-Wise's back line with a team-high 15 digs.
The Golden Eagles got 16 kills from Carly Granger, 12 from Shiann White and another nine from Janeese VerVelde. Kelsey Matusic posted a match-high 17 digs for Charleston as Granger contributed 13 and White added 10. Jour'Ney Powell recorded a match-high seven blocks from the Golden Eagles and Megan Mourier made four of her own, while White served up three aces and Granger earned two aces. Claire Lambert assisted on 24 of Charleston's 56 kills while Chloe Massaro dished another 18 assists.
The Cavs continue their five-match homestand to wrap up the regular season tomorrow with a 6 p.m. match against West Virginia State.
