MARYVILLE, Tenn. – UVa-Wise women's tennis earned a pair of non-conference 9-0 sweeps Sunday in Maryville, Tennessee. The Cavaliers improved their overall season record to 8-5 after defeating Maryville College 9-0 in a true road match and shutting out Johnson University (Tenn.) in a neutral-site contest.
 
Against the host Scots (0-2) UVa-Wise was dominant throughout its lineup, not giving up a single game in doubles play and earning two 6-0, 6-0 singles wins.
 
The duo of junior Daria Tyshchenko (Kirovograd, Ukraine) and senior Bailey Christoforatos (Fredericksburg, Va.) collected a 8-0 win at the top doubles spot over Maryville's McKennah Francis and Katie Stephens, while senior Marti Gay (Denton, Texas) and sophomore Mackenzie Lawson (Wise, Va.) won by an identical score at No. 2 doubles against the Scots' Savannah Bain and Carter Dickinson. At No. 3 doubles, the freshmen tandem of Aya Melhem (Rockvale, Tenn.) and Taylor Carter (Church Hill, Tenn.) were also victorious 8-0 against Tessa Wilcox and Jessica Dillard of Maryville.
 
Both Lawson and freshman Carlysle Funk (Coeburn, Va.) won their singles matches 6-0, 6-0 at the fifth and sixth positions, respectively. Lawson defeated the Scots' Dickinson at fifth singles before Funk took down Maryville's Dillard at the sixth spot to clinch the team win. At No. 1 singles, Tyshchenko topped Bain of Maryville 6-1, 6-0 and Christoforatos earned a 6-2, 6-0 win over the Scots' Francis at second singles. Carter was a 6-0, 6-1 winner against Maryville's Stephens at No. 3 singles, while Gay bested the Scots' Wilcox 6-1, 6-1 at the fourth spot.
 
In the second match of the day against the Royals (1-4), UVa-Wise only gave up a total of two games in doubles play before claiming five straight-set singles wins.
 
Mixing up the doubles teams a bit, Gay and Christoforatos played the top spot and earned an 8-2 victory over Johnson University's Olivia Yates and Madison Buchanan. At No. 2 doubles, Tyshchenko and junior Serena Burgess (Dumfries, Va.) teamed up to take down Hannah Hamm and Alexis Curts of Johnson University. It was then Funk and sophomore Montana Hill (Riner, Va.) who picked up another 8-0 win at third doubles against the Royals' Camille Hyatt and Danielle Shackelford.
 
The singles lineup was also shuffled around a little as Melhem played the top position and came away with a win after Johnson University's Yates had to retire very early in the match due to injury. Hill pulled off a shutout at No. 6 singles when she defeated the Royals' Shackelford 6-0, 6-0. Lawson remained perfect overall in singles on the season, only giving up one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win over Hamm of Johnson University at the third position. At No. 2 singles, Carter picked up a 6-2, 6-0 victory against the Royals' Buchanan and Funk improved to 4-0 overall in singles after topping Johnson University's Curts 6-2, 6-3 at the fourth spot. In the final match of the day, Burgess downed the Royals' Hyatt 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles.
 
The Cavs will now return to Wise for a two-match homestand next weekend to wrap up the regular season. UVa-Wise welcomes Belmont Abbey College for a 12 p.m. match Saturday and hosts West Virginia State Sunday at 3 p.m. on senior day.
