Box Score ATHENS, W.Va. – The UVa-Wise volleyball team was handed a 3-0 (25-17, 27-25, 25-19) Mountain East Conference road loss Tuesday night at Concord University. The visiting Cavaliers (2-17, 1-3 MEC) were not able to overcome strong hitting by the homestanding Mountain Lions (7-9, 2-2 MEC), who swung at a .306 clip for the match.
Concord came out swinging in the opening set and made 18 kills in 35 attempts for an attack percentage of .429. The Mountain Lions followed up the first set with 19 kills in the second followed by a hitting percentage of .282 in the third and only two errors. Altogether, Concord made 50 kills for the night and recorded six total team blocks. Meanwhile, the Cavs hit .159 for the match and earned 40 kills in the three sets to go along with three total team blocks. The second set proved to be UVa-Wise's best showing as the Cavs swung at .204 and made 16 kills.
UVa-Wise won the first three points of the match and led early in the first set at 7-3, but that would be the last advantage for the Cavs in the set as Concord won eight of the next 10 points and worked its way up to a 21-16 edge. The Mountain Lions claimed eight of the final nine points of the set to win it 25-17. Trailing 21-19 in set No. 2, UVa-Wise made three consecutive kills to take a 22-21 lead. The two teams exchanged the next few points before the Cavs found themselves with a set point at 24-23. However, the Mountain Lions rallied for the 27-25 set win after three Concord kills and a Cav attack error. The Mountain Lions jumped out to a 11-5 lead in the third set and didn't back down as UVa-Wise was only able to tie up the score at 19-all before Concord won the final six points of the set to clinch the match.
Concord's Brooke Heck hit an impressive .619 for the match and registered a match-high 14 kills with only one attack error. The Mountain Lions also got 10 kills and three service aces from Ellie Lawrence, while Lindsay Lannen made five blocks and Shea Hoffman four. Casey Mandeville dished out a team-high 25 assists for Concord as Erin Shannon earned a match-high 19 digs.
Senior outside hitters
Erin Anderson (Richmond, Va.) and
Karley Allen (Lanexa, Va.) led the Cavs. Anderson connected on 13 kills and served three aces as Allen made nine kills of her own and had a team-high 15 digs. Senior middle blocker
Lindsey Tucker (Midlothian, Va.) totaled eight kills and came up with two blocks in the loss. Freshman setter
Caitlynn Doss (Abingdon, Va.) assisted on 35 of the Cavs' 40 kills, while senior libero
Erin Lee (Fincastle, Va.) and sophomore
Kyra Jessee (Weber City, Va.) each posted double-digit digs with 13 and 10, respectively.
The Cavs continue their six-match road trip this weekend, playing at Glenville State College Friday at 5 p.m. and at West Virginia Wesleyan Saturday at 10 a.m.
