Box Score BRISTOL, Tenn. – UVa-Wise volleyball was handed a 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-21) setback by King University Tuesday night in Bristol, Tennessee. Playing their final non-conference match of the regular season, the Cavaliers (6-21) were unable to upend the strong-hitting Tornado (10-12).
UVa-Wise was only able to manage a hitting percentage of .126 and collect 29 total kills in the match as King totaled 40 kills with an attack percentage .255. The Tornado swung at a mark of at least .233 in every set and racked up 18 kills in the second set alone. Meanwhile, the Cavs were held to under 10 kills in each of the first two sets. King made five total team blocks and 46 digs as UVa-Wise got two total team blocks and accounted for 39 digs.
After a 12-12 tie in the opening set, the Tornado won four of the next five points to take a 16-13 lead on UVa-Wise. From there, King only gave up four more points in the set while claiming nine of its own to win it 25-17 and take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Cavs started strong in the second set, racing out to an 8-1 advantage before the Tornado came storming back. Both teams went back and forth until the score was tied up at 16-16, that's when King put together a string of four points to take a 20-16 lead it would not relinquish. The Tornado went on to win the set 25-19 after grabbing nine of the last 12 points. Other than a tied score at 12-12, King led for the remainder of the third set despite UVa-Wise staying within close striking distance. After trailing by six at 22-16, the Cavs worked their way back to make it a two-point game at 23-21. However, the homestanding Tornado earned the next two points to win the set 25-21 and clinch the match.
Sophomore right side hitter
Amanda Auxier (Midlothian, Va.) finished the match with a team-high nine kills for the Cavs, while senior outside hitter
Karley Allen (Lanexa, Va.) added seven kills and fellow senior outside hitter
Erin Anderson (Richmond, Va.) contributed six. Anderson also had a match-high three aces and collected eight digs as senior libero liber
Erin Lee (Fincastle, Va.) earned a match-high 12 digs and made one service ace. Freshman setter
Morgan Milligan (Bridgewater, Va.) assisted on 16 of UVa-Wise's 29 kills and got to seven digs, while freshman setter
Caitlynn Doss (Abingdon, Va.) assisted on another eight kills.
King got 10 kills from each Ashton Beckner and Cathy Scaniffe, not to mention nine more kills by Becca Huddleston. Beckner also accounted for three Tornado blocks and Haley Roe posted a double-double for King with a match-high 35 assists and 10 digs, to go along with two service aces. Likewise, Amy Serowski made 10 digs for the Tornado as Sydney Pigage picked up seven of her own and Jenna Sturgeon and Remi Thele each provided two blocks.
The Cavs will play their final road match of the regular season Friday when UVa-Wise travels to Wheeling, West Virginia, to face defending NCAA Division II national champion Wheeling Jesuit University. First serve of the Mountain East Conference contest is scheduled for 5 p.m.
