ATHENS, W.Va. – The UVa-Wise women's tennis team earned a 9-0 Mountain East Conference road sweep Sunday afternoon at Concord University. The Cavaliers (6-4, 3-3 MEC) picked up two 8-1 doubles wins against the homestanding Mountain Lions (0-4, 0-4 MEC) and won four flights of straight-set singles matches. Concord only had four players in the match, giving UVa-Wise default wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 5 and 6 singles.
 
Senior Bailey Christoforatos (Fredericksburg, Va.) teamed up with freshman Aya Melhem (Rockvale, Tenn.) at the top doubles spot for an 8-1 win against the Mountain Lions' Taylor Dixon and Lelia Suydam, while junior Marti Gay (Denton, Texas) paired with sophomore Montana Hill (Riner, Va.) to defeat Stacy Puckett and Amy Ahern of Concord at second doubles.
 
The Cavs were dominant in singles play, giving up only a maximum of three games in any singles match. Freshman Taylor Carter (Church Hill, Tenn.) got back to her winning ways and improved her singles record to 9-1 on the season when she picked up a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Concord's Ahern at the second spot. Sophomore Mackenzie Lawson (Wise, Va.) remained perfect on the year in singles with a 6-2, 6-0 win at the third position against the Mountain Lions' Suydam.
 
Playing in just her second singles match of her young career, freshman Carlysle Funk (Coeburn, Va.) defeated Puckett of Concord by a score of 6-3, 6-0 at the fourth spot. At No. 1 singles, junior Daria Tyshchenko (Kirovograd, Ukraine) made quick work of the Mountain Lions' Dixon as she claimed a 6-1, 6-2 match victory.
 
The Cavs return to Wise for a midweek non-conference match against Lincoln Memorial University Wednesday, first serve from the Jim and Betty Humphreys Tennis Complex is scheduled for 4 p.m.
