WISE, Va. – The UVa-Wise women's tennis team will look to even their record this weekend as they travel to West Liberty, West Virginia, for a 1 p.m. Mountain East Conference match Saturday afternoon before returning home to face Maryville College Sunday.
The Cavaliers (3-4, 2-2 MEC) evened their conference record last weekend with a 7-2 win over Fairmont State last Sunday in Wise, wrapping up a four-match homestand. UVa-Wise is on a two-match winning streak after defeating Shepherd University last Saturday as well.
The Cavs will take on the Hilltoppers (2-1, 1-0 MEC) who were picked to finish third in the MEC preseason poll by a vote of the league's head coaches. West Liberty finished second in the MEC regular season standings last year and earned an NCAA Tournament at-large berth.
The Hilltoppers enter tomorrow's match having earned a 9-0 sweep over Grove City College to begin the season and an 8-1 win over Shepherd for their lone MEC victory. West Liberty's only loss on the early season came on the road at Queens College of New York (8-1).
Last season the Cavs fell 8-1 to the Hilltoppers in Wise as senior
Junetta Nuckels picked up the lone match win at No. 6 singles in a third-set super tiebreaker, 1-6, 6-4, (10-5).
Sophomore
Daria Tyshchenko will attempt to extend her four-match winning streak at the No. 1 singles position this weekend after becoming the first men's or women's tennis player in UVa-Wise history to be named MEC Tennis Player of the Week this past Tuesday. Tyshchenko holds a 5-2 record this season at the top singles spot.
The duo of Nuckels and senior
Haley Thacker will try to remain undefeated at No. 3 doubles after teaming up the last two matches for 8-6 and 8-2 wins.
Sunday the Cavs will return to the Jim and Betty Humphreys Tennis Complex seeking their third win in a row at home. UVa-Wise will take on NCAA Division III Maryville College at 2 p.m. along with the men's tennis team.
Wrapping up their four-match homestand Sunday the Cavalier men will try to win their second consecutive match of the 2015 fall non-conference season after defeating Montreat College 5-4 Thursday.
The match Sunday will be Maryville's first contest of the fall season.
Following this weekend's matches the women's team welcomes Lincoln Memorial to Wise Tuesday, Sept. 29, before both the Cavalier men's and women's teams travel to Lees-McRae College next Saturday, Oct. 3.
