Women’s Tennis Earns Second Consecutive Conference Win

WISE, Va. – Coming off an 8-1 outing yesterday against Shepherd University the UVa-Wise women's tennis team earned another Mountain East Conference victory Sunday afternoon as they defeated Fairmont State 7-2 in foggy conditions.

After not being able to play the match at the original start time of 9 a.m. due to overnight rain and morning mist, the Cavaliers (3-4, 2-2 MEC) and the Falcons (4-3, 1-2 MEC) got things underway at 12:30 p.m.

The Cavs swept doubles to take a 3-0 lead going into singles play, however, the three doubles matches did not come easy.

Seniors Haley Thacker and Junetta Nuckels teamed up at No. 3 doubles for the second-straight match and came away with an 8-2 win against Fairmont State's Janay Beamer and Emily Hart. At the top doubles spot it was sophomore Daria Tyshchenko and junior Bailey Christoforatos who earned an 8-4 victory over Taylor Nichols and Harman Waraich of Fairmont State.

No. 2 doubles was a real battle as sophomore Marti Gay and freshman Mackenzie Lawson gutted out a tiebreaker for the 9-8 (7-5) win against the Falcons' Geena Lammertin and Mollee Brown.

Singles was played with eight-game pro sets in lieu of the normal best-of-three-set matches to guarantee the match was completed before any more rain moved into the area.

Tyshchenko improved her record at the top spot to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in MEC play after taking down Fairmont State's Nichols, 8-5.

Both Thacker and Nuckels had dominant 8-0 wins at the No. 3 and No. 6 singles positions, respectively, while Lawson earned an 8-1 win over Beamer of Fairmont Sate at the fifth singles spot.

The Rams did take two singles match off of the Cavs at No. 2 and No. 4. Fairmont State's Waraich defeated Christoforatos by a score of 8-2 at the second position as the Rams' Lammertin handed Gay an 8-1 loss.

"It was good to get a win on a dreary day", stated Head Coach Danny Rowland after the match. "I think we came out a little flat after our big win yesterday but we still gutted it out. It's a big win and now we have a few days to rest and get ready for our big match Saturday."

With the win the Cavs even their MEC record to 2-2 on the season and look forward to next weekend's match at West Liberty, which will be UVa-Wise's second MEC road match of the season.

The Cavs will have a six-day break before traveling to West Liberty, West Virginia for Saturday's match at 1 p.m.
