WISE, Va. – The UVa-Wise men's and women's tennis teams will take on former conference foe Milligan College Wednesday at the Jim and Betty Humphreys Tennis Complex in Wise at 4 p.m.
The Cavalier women (1-3, 0-2 MEC) enter the match after playing the two top Mountain East Conference opponents this past weekend. UVa-Wise was shutout on the road against West Virginia State Saturday before falling 8-1 to the University of Charleston at home Sunday.
Against West Virginia State Saturday the Cavs played well and fought hard in doubles but were not able to come away with a win before losing all six singles matches against the defending MEC tournament and regular season champion Yellow Jackets. Picked first in the MEC preseason poll, West Virginia State finished last season ranked 48th nationally according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) and fourth in the Atlantic Region.
Playing back-to-back days the Cavs came up just short of taking a doubles match off of Charleston Sunday before claiming a big singles win at the top spot. Charleston finished last season ranked fifth in the ITA Atlantic Region and were picked to finish second in the MEC preseason poll after being MEC tournament runner-ups a year ago.
Daria Tyshchenko highlighted the match against the Golden Eagles by pulling an upset at No. 1 singles. The sophomore defeated Toni Katipa of Charleston in a third-set 10-point tiebreaker 4-6, 7-6 (3), 10-8. Katipa finished last season ranked 10th in singles in the ITA Atlantic Region.
Last season Milligan defeated the Cavs 7-2 in Wise as senior
Junetta Nuckels claimed a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the No. 6 spot. The Buffaloes are entering their first non-conference match of the fall season after finishing third in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Appalachian Athletic Conference last year.
The Cavalier men (0-1) are coming off of a nine-day break since their non-conference fall season opener against Tusculum College last Monday. UVa-Wise was swept at home by the Pioneers, who finished last season ranked 48th in the nation according to the ITA.
The Cavs were shutout 9-0 on the road last season at Milligan. The match Wednesday will be the Buffaloes first of their fall non-conference schedule.
Following tomorrow's match the Cavalier men will have an eight-day break before welcoming Montreat College Thursday, Sept. 24, for a 3 p.m. contest.
After Wednesday's match the Cavalier women will continue their four-match homestand as UVa-Wise will play host to Shepherd University Saturday at 12 p.m.
