Box Score 2 WISE, Va. – Visiting University of Charleston and host UVa-Wise split a Mountain East Conference softball doubleheader on Sunday. The visiting Golden Eagles won game one13-1 before the Cavaliers scored a 2-1 victory in game two to end regular season play.
In the opener, Charleston (35-10, 20-8 MEC)jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second and never relinquished. The Golden Eagles started off the scoring with an RBI single into center field from Andrea Hayes. The following play, Katelyn Hamilton singled into right field to score Natalie Beck. Rachelle Toppings hit a sacrifice fly into left field to score the third run of the game.
Charleston scored five runs in the third, scored two runs in the fourth then added three more runs in the top of the fifth to run-rule the Cavaliers (10-24, 10, 18 MEC).
UVa-Wise scored its loan run in the bottom of the fourth as Mindy Combs hit a homerun into left field. In game two, the Golden Eagles jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Kelly Browning hit a single into left field, scoring Ayla Santos.
The Cavaliers tied the game in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly into left field by Sarah Beamer. The winning run for UVa-Wise came in the bottom of the sixth as Erika McLaughlin hit a solo homerun into centerfield.
Beamer allowed four hits, one run and struck out nine batters.
The game concludes the last game of the season for the Cavaliers.
