Co-Head Coach Karen Bitter Gets 100th Win in Split Against W. Va. State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
WISE - - History was made at Cavalier Field Friday afternoon as Co-Head Coach Karen Bitter claimed the 100 win in her coaching career at UVa-Wise as her Cavaliers scored a 3-1 victory over West Virginia State.

UVa-Wise (10-23, 10-17 MEC) starter Kellie Waycaster and West Virginia State (26-16, 14-12 MEC) starter Allyson Burgess locked up in a pitcher's duel in game one. Neither team scored until Alena Weyant hit a solo homer for the Yellow Jackets in the top of the fifth inning.

Bridget Henzel put any further scoring threat to rest when she gunned down pinch runner Summer Sword when she tried to steal second base.

The catcher then tied the game in the home half of the inning with a deep blast over the centerfield fence.
In the top of the sixth, West Virginia State appeared to be on the cusp of regaining the lead when the visitors got the bases loaded with nobody out.

Micca Mirabella drove a ball to medium centerfield that appeared deep enough to score the go-ahead run. Zoe Millard however came up firing to home and Henzel blocked the plate perfectly as Sydney Kaplan was thrown out at the plate.

Waycaster then worked out of the jam and her offense gave her two runs of support in the home sixth as Mindy Combs lined a RBI double and Waycaster drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

West Virginia State allowed the tying run to get to the plate in the seventh but Waycaster worked out of the jam to record the win.

Waycaster scattered seven hits and struck out two in the complete game effort.

In game two, the Cavaliers fell to the Yellow Jackets 9-1.

West Virginia State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Kelsey Martin knocked a double into left field scoring Sabrina Schouten.

Alexa Hernandez evened the score 1-1 in the bottom of the first with a solo homerun into right field.

The Yellow Jackets scored a single run in the second as Alana Weyant hit her second homerun of the day into right center.

West Virginia State added three more runs in the top of the third, but sealed the deal in the in the top of the fifth as Dee Dee Loftis hit a grand slam into left field.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Saturday as the team hosts the University of Charleston at 2 pm.
