Box Score 2 Institute, W.Va. - The sixth inning proved to be costly for UVa-Wise, as host West Virginia State used the frame to overcome a deficit in each of Thursday's games in claiming a doubleheader sweep. A four-run sixth inning in the finale led to an 8-5 win while the Yellow Jackets plated two runs in the sixth inning of game one to post a 3-2 victory.
The Cavaliers (4-14, 4-8 MEC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning of game one as
Sarah Beamer doubled to center. Beamer scored on an RBI double into center field from
Alexa Hernandez for the first run of the contest. Following the double,
Zoe Millard knocked one into right field which allowed Hernandez to score.
The Yellow Jackets (15-9, 7-5 MEC) got on the board in the bottom of the fourth from an RBI sacrifice fly-out from Kelsey Martin.
Sydney Kaplan and Martin would each line RBI doubles in the sixth inning to plate the two runs.
Allyson Burgess pitched the entire first game for West Virginia State. She had five hits, two runs and five stikeouts.
In game two, the Yellow Jackets took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Shandell Curtis scored of an RBI ground out from Summer Sword.
UVa-Wise tied the game 1-1 as Beamer hit her second double of the day into center field. Millard knocked a single into center field allowing Beamer to score in the third inning.
West Virginia State would once again take the lead in the bottom of the third inning on a two-run home run from Martin to make the score 3-1.
The Cavaliers would take their first lead of the second game in the top of the fourth.
Kellie Waycaster reached first base and advanced to second on a pair of errors. Millard singled into left field allowing Waycaster to score.
Bridget Henzel tripled down the right field line scoring two runs for UVa-Wise.
Erika McLaughlin added an RBI single into to make the score 5-3.
The Yellow Jackets scored a single run in the bottom of the fourth off of an error to cut the lead to one.
West Virginia State took advantage of four errors in the home sixth to post the 8-5 win.
Millard, Henzel, and McLaughlin each had two hits in the loss for UVa-Wise.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Saturday as the team travels to Charleston, West Virginia to take on the University of Charleston at 1 pm.
