Annie Hanson Scores Four Goals as Lacrosse Wins First Ever MEC Game

Box Score

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio - - Annie Hanson scored four goals as UVa-Wise held off a late Notre Dame rally to post its first ever Mountain East Conference victory 10-9 Sunday afternoon.

UVa-Wise (3-8, 1-2) built an 8-2 halftime lead as Hanson scored three of her four goals as part of a 6-0 scoring spurt by the visitors to take a 6-1 lead.

Brooke Czarnecki scored her second goal of the game for Notre Dame (2-5, 1-2) with 8:59 to play in the opening half to cut the lead to 6-2.

The score would remain unchanged until the 2:52 mark when Rachel Cole scored for the Cavaliers.  Hanson added her fourth goal of the half with under 30 seconds to play to send coach Meghan Dennehy's squad into halftime leading 8-2.

The Falcons would begin their comeback early in the second half as Darbie Barkman scored a pair of unassisted goals less than 10 minutes into the half.

With its lead cut to 8-4, UVa-Wise responded with a goal from Taylor Lawton with 21:03 to play in the contest.

Czarnecki and Cole would trade goals to make the score 10-5 Cavaliers with less than 19 minutes remaining.

Notre Dame would score the next four goals, the last of which came by Allison Merten to make the score 10-9 with 6:11 to play. Barkman assisted on three of the Falcons goals in the comeback.

The Falcons would get just one shot on goal the remainder of the contest as Merten missed wide with less than two minutes to play.

After recovering the miss, UVa-Wise would hold the ball until 12 seconds were left when Notre Dame caused a turnover.  With the seconds ticking down, the Falcons would be unable to get off a shot giving the Cavaliers their first conference win in the history of the first-year program.

Cole and Stephanie Sintetas each scored two goals while Mel Reilly added saves in the historic victory.

Just two games remain in the inaugural regular season but they loom large.  With the win, UVa-Wise is in a three-way tie for third place.

Next up the team will host West Virginia Wesleyan College Friday at 5:30 pm inside Carl Smith Stadium.
