Box Score URBANA, Ohio - - Another first occurred for the women's lacrosse program at UVa-Wise in their game at Urbana University Friday evening. The two Mountain East Conference foes required overtime to decide the issue before the host Blue Knights claimed a 10-9 win thanks to Katie Barnhart's overtime goal.
UVa-Wise (2-8, 0-2) held a 6-5 lead at the half as Rachel Cole netted three goals in the period and Taylor Lawton added two more. The other Cavalier goal came from Hannah Marshall in the opening stanza.
Coach Meghan Dennehy's club would stretch its lead to two when Lawton scored her third goal of the game at the 29:24 mark in the second half.
Urbana (1-8, 1-2) would tie the game with 18:22 to play in regulation when a Chanelle Bondurant shot found the back of the net evening the contest at 7-7. Barnhart scored earlier in the half to cut the deficit to one.
31 seconds after the Bondurant goal, Annie Hanson scored for UVa-Wise to put her squad back in front.
Taylor Henderson tied the score again at the 12:31 mark when she scored unassisted.
Again, the visitors responded to regain the advantage. Stephanie Sintetas scored with 7:28 to play to give the Cavs a 9-8 lead.
Just six seconds later the Blue Knights tied the score once more with Barnhart's fourth goal of the night.
UVa-Wise would gain possession and hold the ball for nearly four minutes to take the final shot of regulation. The effort would be for not as Urbana would force overtime.
Barnhart would score what would prove to be the game-winning goal with 1:02 to play in the first overtime period in what was the first overtime game in Urbana history as well.
Barnhart led all players with five goals and Paige Waqa added 13 saves in goal for the Blue Knights.
Mel Reilly had 13 saves while Lawton added two groundballs and two caused turnovers in defeat.
The two-game Ohio road trip will continue for UVa-Wise on Sunday when the team visits Notre Dame College.
