Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WISE, Va. – Tusculum College hit nine homeruns to score 32 runs in a doubleheader sweep against UVa-Wise on Monday. The Pioneers claimed a 16-1 victory in game one before defeating the Cavaliers 16-8 in game two.

Tusculum (7-7) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game one and never relinquished the lead. Treslyn Reese started the big-scoring day for the Pioneers as her RBI base hit scored Kaytlin Stroinski with one out in the inning

UVa-Wise (0-6) was retired 1-2-3 in the home half of the frame before Tusculum put the game out of reach in the top of the second. 10 Pioneers would hit in the inning while six would cross the plate, the big blow came when Jenna Restivo homered with two outs to extend the lead to 7-0.

The Cavaliers lone run in the contest came in the third with the team trailing 12-0, Whitney Williams led off the frame with a double to right field and came around to score on an infield single by Mindy Combs.

In total, Tusculum lined 13 hits in the five-inning run-rule victory. All nine starters had at least one hit for the Pioneers while Restivo collected five RBI as she belted two home runs in the win.

Tusculum again gained an early lead in game two. Nicole Ball doubled to lead off the game and scored on back-to-back bunts to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead after a half inning

The home half of the inning saw coach Karen Bitter's team gain its first lead of the day.

Combs homered to tie the game to lead off the inning before teammate Sarah Beamer blasted a grand slam over the left field fence. UVa-Wise added a sixth run in the inning on an RBI single by Williams.

The lead would be short lived as Tusculum sent 13 hitters to the plate in an eight-run second inning. Restivo homered, her third of the day, to lead off the inning and Alexi Kruel had a two-RBI hit in the frame. The Pioneers also took advantage of three errors committed by the Cavs.

Bridget Henzel homered for UVa-Wise in the home half of the second to cut the lead to 9-7, it would be as close as her club would get.

Bailey Culler homered for Tusculum in the fourth inning before Courtney Williamson plated Ball on a one-out single in the fifth inning to increase the lead to 11-7.

Beamer lined an RBI double in the home fifth to cut the lead to 11-8 before Tusculum erupted for eight runs in the top of the sixth to claim its second run-rule victory of the day.

The two schools combined for 26 hits in the finale but six errors by UVa-Wise proved to be costly. Henzel finished the game 2-4 while Beamer went 2-2 with five RBIs and a run scored in the loss.

Ball finished 3-4 with three RBIs and four runs scored for Tusculum while Kruel knocked in four runs in the night cap.

UVa-Wise is scheduled to return to action on Saturday when team faces Indiana University of Pennsylvania in a doubleheader in Salem, Virginia.
