Box Score 2 NEWBERRY, S.C. – Newberry College claimed a 9-1 victory in game one before scoring four runs in the sixth inning to win 4-3 and complete a doubleheader sweep of UVa-Wise in softball action on Saturday.
UVa-Wise (0-4) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Bridget Henzel homered to right center. It would be the only lead of the game for the Cavaliers.
Newberry (13-10) soared out to a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Maude McCourry walked to bring in the first run for the Wolves, followed by a two-run double from Mallory Germidt. Germidt would score on a RBI single to center field from Hailey Drawe.
The Wolves would add two runs in the third, two in the fifth and a single run in the sixth to claim the 9-1 victory.
In game two, UVa-Wise took the 1-0 lead in the top of the second as Monica Brandts doubled to right center to knock in Alexa Hernandez. The Cavaliers would advance to 3-0 in the top of the sixth on an RBI triple by Henzel, who knocked in Emily Kale and scored on a passed ball.
Bedard tripled to bring in two runs, while McCourry singled to tie the game 3-3. Nicolette Myers slammed a single into the outfield which allowed McCourry to score the winning run before Gerndt was tagged out.
UVa-Wise will be back in action on Monday when the team takes on Tusculum College.
