Box Score 2 WISE, Va. – Visiting Notre Dame College and host UVa-Wise split a Mountain East Conference softball doubleheader on Sunday. The visiting Falcons won game one 7-2 before the Cavaliers scored a 3-1 victory in game two.
In the opener, the game remained scoreless until the top of the fifth. Notre Dame (6-14, 3-3 MEC) started the scoring off with an RBI single into left field from Anna Myers. Sarah Depp tripled with the bases loaded to put the Falcons up 4-0. Depp would score on a wild pitch to go up 5-0. A single into left field from Kelsey Coleman and a single from Mackenzie Wallace added the final two runs of the inning.
Kellie Waycaster homered in the bottom of the fifth to put UVa-Wise (4-12, 4-6 MEC) on the board. The final run for the Cavaliers came late in the seventh inning as Waycaster doubled into leftfield and Erika McLaughlin scored. In game two, the Falcons took an early 1-0 lead over the Cavaliers as Coleman tripled followed by a sacrifice from Kayla Sidorski.
Mindy Combs hammered a homerun into left field to give UVa-Wise a 3-1 advantage in the bottom of the first. No other runs would be scored in the remainder of the game.
Sara Beamer (1-5) pitched all seven innings of the second game and allowed three hits, one run and struck out six batters.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Friday as the team travels to Institute, West Virginia to take on West Virginia State University.
