Box Score WISE - - History was made at Carl Smith Stadium Tuesday as UVa-Wise played host to its first ever women's lacrosse game. Tennessee Wesleyan walked out victorious 15-10 in the non-conference contest but fans of all ages and knowledge of the sport were in attendance for the momentous occasion.
Tennessee Wesleyan (5-2) scored the first two goals of the game when Jasmine Hickman and Taylor Barganier each scored less than five minutes in.
UVa-Wise (0-6) got on the board on an unassisted goal by Taylor Lawton at the 24:56 mark before the Bulldogs extended their lead to 4-1 with just under 20 minutes to play in the first half.
Hannah Marshall and Annie Hanson would score back-to-back goals for the Cavaliers to cut the lead to one with 13:52 to play in the first period.
Wesleyan would close the half on a 6-1 scoring splurge as Hickman added three more of her game-high five goals in the run.
The Cavs would get to within four goals when Hanson found the back of the net with 10:27 to play to cut the Bulldogs' lead to 13-9 but it would be as close as coach Meghan Dennehy's club would get.
It marked the second consecutive game that the first-year program lost by five goals after dropping each of its first three games by double digits.
Marshall and Lawton each had a hat trick in the loss as each player netted three goals. Rachel Cole and Stephanie Sintetas also scored in the inaugural game at Smith Stadium.
In goal, Mel Reilly stopped 13 shots for UVa-Wise. The freshman has now posted 10 or more saves in three of her team's first six games.
UVa-Wise will be back in action next Wednesday when the team travels to Lincoln Memorial University.
