Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – UVa-Wise snapped its eight game losing streak in game one of Monday's Mountain East Conference softball doubleheader at Shepherd University. Sarah Beamer had two hits and also knocked in a pair of runs in the 6-4 game one victory. Game two saw Shepherd hold off a late UVa-Wise rally as the Rams posted a 3-2 win to earn a split in the twin-bill.
UVa-Wise (1-8, 1-2 MEC) and Shepherd University remained scoreless until the fourth inning of the opener when Emily Kale hit an RBI single to right field. With the bases loaded, Zoe Millard hit an RBI single into left field to send Beamer home to given coach Karen Bitter's club a 2-0 lead.
The Cavaliers continued their two-run streak in the fifth inning as Beamer doubled down the left field line allowing both Whitney Williams and Alexa Hernandez to scamper home.
Trailing 4-0, Shepherd (8-5, 1-3 MEC) scored its first run in the bottom of the fifth as Alexandra Witt doubled to right center sending Paige Buckworth home.
UVa-Wise added two more runs in the top of the sixth as Erika McLaughlin homered to left field plating Bridget Henzel.
Shepherd would mount a comeback bid in the home sixth with three runs but that would not be enough as Courtney Clemons lined out to third base representing the tying run.
In game two, UVa-Wise jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as Kellie Waycaster singled through the left side allowing Hernandez to score.
The Rams scored three runs in the fifth and would never relinquish the lead as Clemons had a three-run inside the park homer.
Waycaster had two hits and two RBI, while five other Cavaliers lined a hit in the loss.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Wednesday as the team travels to Athens, West Virginia to take on Concord University at 3 pm.
