Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. - - Host Newberry outscored UVa-Wise 8-3 in the second half of Saturday's game to claim a 12-7 women's lacrosse game.
Newberry (2-7) scored the first two goals of the contest as Jessica Baxtrom scored on a free position shot with 25:36 to play in the opening period. Just over two minutes later, Victoria Thomas scored unassisted to give her club a 2-0 lead.
UVa-Wise (0-5) scored the next four goals to take the first lead in the first-year program's history.
Annie Hanson scored unassisted with 21:41 to play to go in the first half. Hannah Marshall and Henson each scored on a free position shots over the next 10 minutes to give the Cavaliers a 3-2 lead.
Danielle Newcomb then scored off a Taylor Lawton assist to put UVa-Wise ahead 4-2 with 9:26 to go in the first half.
Newberry would then score the next five goals to take a 7-4 lead with 25:50 to go in the game.
Marshall would score her second goal of the contest to cut it to 7-5 at the 25:04 mark but it would be as close as UVa-Wise would get.
Hanson scored three goals in the loss to record the first hat trick in school history. Goalie Mel Reilly registered 21 saves while Kelsey Greene, five, and Taylor Lawton, four combined to collect nine groundballs.
Baxtrom led all players with four goals while Lindsay Huber tied Greene for game-high groundball honors with five.
UVa-Wise will play its first ever home contest Tuesday when Tennessee Wesleyan visits Smith Stadium. The action is set to begin at 6:30 p.m.
