Olinger Homers in Opening Day Loss

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - - Union College erased a six-run deficit in game one to outlast UVa-Wise 9-8 in extra innings before scoring five first inning runs of game two to claim a 6-1 darkness shortened victory in the finale to sweep a doubleheader at Jerry Carey Stadium.  The pair of games were the first for UVa-Wise this season, coach Hank Banner's squad had missed its first eight games due to snow.

Game one saw UVa-Wise (0-2) jump out to a 5-0 lead behind two shutout innings and a pair of RBIs from Tye Marshall.

The Cavaliers would extend the lead to 7-1 before Union tied the game with a six-run fourth inning.  The Bulldogs took advantage of an error and lined five hits in the big frame.

Union (6-3) took its first lead of the day in the sixth inning when Josh Wilson knocked in pinch runner Corey Corum.

The game appeared to be over as Bulldogs' pitcher Matt Hamons retired the first hitter he saw on one pitch, meaning he was two outs from a save.  UVa-Wise sophomore Jordan Olinger would tie the game on the very next pitch, the outfielder blasted a first-pitch fastball well over the centerfield wall to tie the game at eight.

From there, the game would remain tied until Union won the game in the bottom of the eighth inning on a game-winning base hit by Wilson after the first three Bulldogs in the inning walked.

Brett Yates, Ty Lighton, Bill Steven, Matthew Wright, Olinger, and Austin Johnson all had two hits in the loss for UVa-Wise.  As a team, the Cavs lined 15 hits in the season opener.  Olinger and Wright joined Marshall with two RBIs each.

Wilson finished the game 4-5 with two RBIs while Zach Gross had two hits and scored two runs for the Bulldogs.

Hammons earned the win after blowing the save, he worked two innings only allowing the Olinger solo blast.  Union pitching fanned eight Cavaliers in the game-one win.

The day's second game started similar to the first with offensive fireworks.  This time it was Union who got on the board early.  Three walks, two hit batters, and five hits in the home half of the first inning resulted in a five-run lead for the Bulldogs.  It would be a lead that would never be threatened.

The Cavaliers scored their lone run of the game in the top of the second when Ryan Dickt hit a ground ball up the middle that resulted in a throwing error on an attempted double-play turn.

Union responded with a run in the bottom of the frame on an opposite field solo home run by Nelson Price.

It would be all the scoring the game would feature as darkness crept in forcing the contest to be called in the bottom of the fifth inning.

UVa-Wise is slated to return to play on Wednesday against King University, weather permitting.
