WISE, Va. – Defending Mountain East Conference Tournament Champion UVa-Wise will begin its 2015 season on Saturday when the team visits Limestone College for a non-conference doubleheader. Coach Karen Bitter's Highland Cavaliers were picked to finish second in the MEC Preseason Poll, one spot behind defending regular season champion West Virginia Wesleyan.
The Cavaliers will have to replace 10 players who were key contributors to last season's squad but the team returns team captain Alexa Hernandez and outfielder Mindy Combs. Hernandez hit .328 as a freshman and scored 25 runs while Combs slugged a team-high 10 home runs and knocked in a team-best 46 runs.
"I am really looking forward to getting this 2015 season underway. We have a lot of new faces this year and also return some key, familiar faces as well. It will be exciting to watch their progress and see them gel together as a team. We are looking forward to defending our championship, and these ladies are working hard to bring another one home." said an optimistic Bitter.
