WISE, Va. – UVa-Wise men's basketball welcomes former conference foe Montreat College (N.C.) to the David J. Prior Convocation Center Monday night for a non-conference contest at 7 p.m.
Storylines – vs. Montreat College (N.C.)In an old Appalachian Athletic Conference battle the UVa-Wise Cavaliers take on the Montreat Cavaliers for the first time in over five years. Before UVa-Wise joined the Mountain East Conference and became full NCAA Division II members, the Cavs competed in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics' AAC. Montreat holds a slight 9-7 edge over UVa-Wise in the two teams' all-time series but the Cavs have defeated the Montreat Cavaliers the previous two meetings. UVa-Wise defeated Montreat 75-61 back on Dec. 5, 2009, and then followed up that victory with an 86-76 win later that season in the two schools' last meeting on Feb. 3, 2010.
UVa-Wise and Montreat met for the first time on Dec. 10, 1998.
Montreat is led by first-year head coach Garrett Jones, who was the assistant coach at Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) in Texas the past four years before taking over the men's basketball program. Sophomore guard Alonzo Mobley leads Montreat in scoring and rebounding this season with 19.3 points per game and 5.8 rebounds per game. Freshman guard Amir Davis is averaging16.3 points per game for the Montreat Cavaliers, while freshman guard Frank Swift (11.5 ppg) is making 2.5 assists per game and junior forward Joshua Kirk rounds out the double-digit scorers at 11.3 points per game.
About UVa-WiseThe Cavs of UVa-Wise are looking to rebound from Saturday evening's non-conference road loss at 17th-ranked Lincoln Memorial University of the South Atlantic Conference. UVa-Wise was outscored by 45 points (114-69) in the setback and was outplayed in the paint, giving up 42 points between the blocks while only scoring 22 points. Giving up 28 points on 14 turnovers the Cavs were unmatched off the bench, being outscored by the Railsplitters 50-20. Senior forward
Matt Day led UVa-Wise in the contest with 15 points and seven rebounds, nearly his third double-double through five games this season.
Day is leading the Cavs this season, averaging a double-double at 18.6 points per game and 10 rebounds per game. Sophomore point guard
Philip Owens II is putting up 13.2 points per game while leading the team in assists at three per game. Freshman shooting guard
Camryn Fort (10.8 ppg) is averaging double-digit scoring as well, along with sophomore forward
Dimitri Sousa (10.2 ppg).
Tomorrow's contest begins a three-game homestand for UVa-Wise as the Cavs step back into league play Thursday against West Virginia Wesleyan before hosting Glenville State Saturday.
