Men’s and Women’s Tennis to Play Pair of Road Matches over Weekend

WISE, Va. – The UVa-Wise men's and women's tennis teams will go on the road for a pair of matches this weekend in West Virginia. Both the Cavalier men's and women's teams travel to Fairmont, West Virginia, Saturday to take on West Virginia Wesleyan at 1 p.m. in a neutral site match before the women's team faces Davis & Elkins College Sunday afternoon, while the men's team plays Salem International University Sunday morning.

Saturday's match against West Virginia Wesleyan will be the women's final Mountain East Conference match of the season, while the men's match will be a non-conference contest between the two MEC schools. Sunday's non-conference matches at Davis & Elkins and Salem International will be both the men's and women's final regular-season matches of the fall season, the women still have MEC postseason play next weekend.

The Cavalier women (6-5, 3-3) enter this weekend's matches vying for a No. 4 seed at the upcoming Mountain East Conference Women's Tennis Championship held next Friday through Sunday, Oct. 16-18, in Charleston, West Virginia. Already having locked in a spot in next weekend's MEC tournament, the Cavs will be the fourth seed with a win over West Virginia Wesleyan (4-3, 2-3) Saturday afternoon or the fifth seed with a loss.

Regardless of tomorrow's outcome between the Cavs and the Lady Bobcats, UVa-Wise will face West Virginia Wesleyan in the first round of the MEC tournament as the fourth and fifth seed play each other in the opening round Friday, Oct. 16.

Last season the Cavs defeated West Virginia Wesleyan 5-4 in Wise before falling to the Lady Bobcats 5-1 in the MEC tournament.

The Cavs are on a three-match winning streak and have won five of their past six matches, most recently UVa-Wise defeated Bluefield College (Va.) 6-3 at home this past Tuesday.

Sunday the Cavs will match up against Davis & Elkins in Elkins, West Virginia, for a 1 p.m. first serve.

The Cavalier men (2-2) will face a West Virginia Wesleyan team Saturday who has only played one dual match this season, which was a 9-0 non-conference win at Fairmont State. Last season the Cavs were swept by the Bobcats in league play at home.

The Cavs have not competed in a match in nearly two weeks but have won their previous two contests against Montreat College (5-4) and Maryville College (8-1) in Wise.

Following Saturday's non-conference match against West Virginia Wesleyan the Cavs will face Salem International at 9 a.m. Sunday in Salem, West Virginia. The men's championship season with conference matches will begin this spring and take place from February through April.
