BRISTOL, Tenn. - - UVa-Wise scored a doubleheader sweep of host King University in softball action on Tuesday. Led by the solid pitching of Rachel Hawks and 12 hits the Cavaliers won game one 4-0 before using a three-run fifth inning in game two to post a 4-2 win.
UVa-Wise (2-2) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning in the opener as Rachel Fischer singled and scored on a Mindy Combs double. The consecutive hits came after King (2-5) starter Hannah Light retired the first two hitters of the inning. Light would wiggle out of the jam as she retired Alexa Hernandez to end the threat.
The game would remain 1-0 for the next two frames as Hawks (1-1) stranded two runners in the third inning before retiring King in order in the fourth. The Cavaliers would extend the lead to three in the top of the fifth inning as Hernandez singled and Sarah Wiltshire walked to put a pair of runners on. The duo would later score on a two-RBI hit by Allyssa Zebrowski.
Hawks would make the lead stick as she would not allow another hit by the Tornado in the contest. UVa-Wise would add a fourth run in the top of the seventh as Christina Ziemba knocked in Hernandez.
Hernandez finished the game 2-3 with two runs scored while Ziemba lined a game-high three hits. Fischer and Zebrowski also had two hits each in the first win of the season for coach Karen Bitter's squad.
Hawks allowed just three hits in the win while striking out two and walking one in the complete game, shutout effort. Light (2-2) suffered the loss in the circle as she surrendered four earned runs and 12 hits in defeat.
The finale saw the Cavs again jump out to an early 1-0 lead. With two outs in the top of the first, Zebrowski singled and moved to third on a fielding error by the Tornado. She would score one batter later as Charity Lawson reached on an infield single. The Tornado would tie the game in the bottom half of the frame on an RBI double by Fallon Thomas.
King would take a 2-1 lead one inning later as the host took advantage of a wild pitch and error to produce an unearned run.
The score would remain 2-1 Tornado until the three-run fifth inning by the Cavs. Again, the Cavs would score with two outs. After a pair of two-out singles by Hernandez and Wiltshire, Ziemba would reach on an infield single; a King error would allow Hernandez to score and tie the game while the other runners moved up a base.
UVa-Wise would take the lead for good on the next at bat as Zebrowski doubled down the left field line to score Wiltshire and Ziemba.
Kellie Waycaster would come on in relief to fire two innings of no-hit ball and Hawks followed suit with a no-hit seventh to secure the victory. Lannie Johnston (1-0) earned the win in the circle with two scoreless innings of relief.
Lawson, Zebrowski, and Ziemba all lined two hits and scored a run for the Cavs and Zebrowski added an RBI in the game two win.
Morgan Lowe (0-3) suffered the loss for King as she surrendered nine hits and four runs. No King player recorded more than one hit in the loss.
