Softball Sweeps Ursuline to Close Out Homestand

WISE – The Highland Cavalier softball team closed out a 16-game home stand with a pair of wins over Ursuline Sunday afternoon on the Bill Gatton Field.

GAME ONE: UVA Wise 6, Ursuline 2
- Ursuline managed five hits, but UVA Wise's two home runs and a strong seven-inning pitching performance ensured the win.
- In the third inning, UVA Wise's Kylee Holt walked and stole second, setting the stage for scoring. After a single by Adyson Gibson and a hit by Taylor Clay, Holt scored on a sacrifice fly by Kaylynn Baker. Ursuline led 2-1 at the end of the third inning.
- The fourth inning saw Savannah Johnson hit a two-run homer, bringing in Kennedy Miller, which shifted the momentum in favor of the Cavaliers. The score stood at 3-2 after four innings.
- In the fifth, Lindsey Polan extended the lead with a two-run home run, scoring Clay. This increased the Cavs' advantage to 5-2.
- The sixth inning added another run for the Highland Cavaliers as Johnson doubled and was replaced by pinch runner Emmaleigh Banks, who scored on a sacrifice fly by Holt, making it 6-2.
- The Cavaliers' defense held strong in the final inning, maintaining the 6-2 lead to secure the win.
- Bayleigh Allison pitched a complete game for UVA Wise, delivering 7 innings with 95 pitches thrown. Allison allowed 5 hits and 2 runs, only one of which was earned, while striking out four and walking three. The pitcher induced 11 groundouts and 5 flyouts, maintaining a WHIP of 1.14 in the game.
- Lindsey Polan made an impact with a home run, driving in two runs and scoring once. Savannah Johnson contributed significantly by hitting a home run and a double, collecting two RBIs and scoring a run. Taylor Clay recorded two hits and added a stolen base while scoring a run to boost the team's offense.

GAME TWO: UVA Wise 4, Ursuline 3
- UVA Wise secured a narrow 4-3 victory over the Arrows in game two. In the first inning, Gibson singled and later scored on a groundout by Lindsey Polan, giving the Highland Cavaliers an early 1-0 lead. The score remained unchanged in the second inning.
- In the third inning, Gibson singled again and was driven in along with Clay by a two-RBI single from Baker, extending the lead to 3-0.
- During the fifth inning, Polan doubled and was replaced by pinch runner Emmaleigh Banks, who scored on a single by Miller, making it 4-0 for the Cavs.
- Ursuline mounted a tense comeback in the seventh inning, scoring three runs, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Holly Earl. However, the rally fell short, and the Cavaliers held on for the 4-3 win.
- Olivia  Shockley delivered a complete game for the Cavs, pitching 7 innings and allowing 3 earned runs on 9 hits. Shockley faced 31 batters, issuing 2 walks and striking out 2. With a total of 93 pitches, 64 were strikes, and the pitcher recorded a WHIP of 1.57. Despite a challenging seventh inning where 3 runs were conceded, Shockley maintained control throughout the game, including a key pickoff in the fourth inning.
- Adyson Gibson contributed significantly with three hits and two runs, adding one stolen base to her performance. Taylor Clay showcased her speed by stealing two bases while recording two hits and scoring once. Kaylynn Baker drove in two runs with her hit, demonstrating her ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities.

UP NEXT
The Cavs hit the road for the first time in a month when they travel to Bristol, Tennessee for a meeting with King Friday afternoon. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
