WISE – It was Eastern Virginia vs. Southwest Virginia as the UVA Wise lacrosse team met Virginia State for the first time Sunday afternoon. In the end it was the experience of the Highland Cavaliers earning them the 16-6 win over the Trojans.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first quarter began with a strong start for UVA Wise, as
Noley Hiller scored the opening goal at 13:01 with a free position shot.
Caitlyn Schultz extended the lead to 2-0 with a goal at 12:03, assisted by Hiller. Virginia State responded with a goal from Kayla Carroll-Williams at 8:16 on a man-up free position attempt, narrowing the deficit. However, Schultz scored twice more for the Cavaliers, with her third goal of the quarter coming at 2:06, assisted by
Abby Schrafft, to secure a 4-1 lead by the end of the quarter.
- Virginia State opened the second quarter with a goal by Sophia Toye at 12:47, assisted by Najiyah Jones, capitalizing on a man-up advantage. The Cavs responded with a scoring run, starting with Hiller's goal at 7:42.
Leslie Clay extended the lead with a free position goal at 6:32. Carea Tuck narrowed the gap for the Trojans with a successful free position shot at 6:01. The Cavaliers regained momentum with goals by
Parker Cribbs,
Issie Brown, and
Kyncade Butler, pushing the score to 9-3. Virginia State's Milan Poole scored the final goal of the quarter with one second remaining, assisted by Unique Anthony, bringing the score to 9-4 at the end of the quarter.
- The Cavs maintained their lead over Virginia State in the third quarter, bolstered by Schultz's goal at 13:22 from a free position shot, extending the score to 11-4.
Chloe Huston played a pivotal role in the possession game, securing multiple draw controls and ground balls.
Olivia Guy added another goal for the Highland Cavaliers at 4:26, also from a free position, further solidifying the team's advantage. Virginia State responded with a late goal by Carroll-Willia at 1:26, closing the quarter with a score of 11-5 in favor of UVA Wise.
- The Cavaliers extended their lead in the fourth quarter with a strong offensive display, beginning with Schultz scoring twice, first at 13:12 with an assist from Huston, and again at 12:19 during a man-up situation, assisted by Brown. Cribbs added another man-up goal at 9:10, assisted by Butler. Virginia State's Jones responded with a goal from a free position at 7:12. Taylor Thompson, securing the quarter's final tally. The match concluded with a decisive victory for UVA Wise, 16-6.
GETTING WISE
Caitlyn Schultz had a big day as she had the double hat-trick with six goals in addition to an assists. This marks the second time in her career that she has had six goals in a game (the other was at Converse on March 11, 2003) and ties her for third-most in a game in school history, behind the seven by Kristin Gobbi vs. Charleston on April 22, 2018 and McKayla Grasham at Shepherd on April 20, 2019.
