WISE -- UVA Wise went undefeated for the week as they defeated Catawba 3-0 on Saturday in the David J. Prior Convocation Center, taking the sets 25-10, 25-18, 25-10. They used a very balanced attack, which saw them hit .321 with 36 kills while holding the Catawba Indians to a -.009 hitting percentage and 25 attack errors.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
After the Catawba Indians scored the opening point,
Mable James tied the set with a kill and the Highland Cavaliers moved ahead 5-1 behind two
Maggy Sechrist kills and a
Riley Brandon service ace. After CC got back within 5-2, a service error returned the serve to the Cavs, and Sechrist served through a 6-0 run that included her ace and a
Skye Williams kill for an 11-2 lead. Catawba reached 13-5, but the Cavaliers won seven of the next eight rallies, using two
Serina Petersen kills, a
Libby Nickels ace and blocks involving Sechrist and James to stretch the score to 20-6. The Catawba Indians scored three of the next four points to get to 21-9, but the Highland Cavaliers finished the set with kills by Sechrist and James before a CC attack error closed a 25-10 win.
Second Set
UVA Wise opened the second set with a
Riley Brandon kill off
Abigail Curtis' assist and a service ace, but Catawba pulled even at 2-2 and the set remained tied repeatedly through 9-9. Brandon put down kills for 11-9 and 12-10, while Sechrist and
Mable James helped the Cavaliers stay in front before
Skye Williams' kill at 17-14 began a four-point stretch that pushed the lead to 20-14. The Catawba Indians cut the margin to 22-17 on a Maggie Ayers kill, but Sechrist answered with kills for 23-17 and 24-18, and a CC attack error closed the set for the Highland Cavaliers at 25-18.
Third Set
The Cavaliers opened the third set by winning seven of the first eight points, getting kills from
Serina Petersen,
Mable James, Sechrist,
Riley Brandon and
Olivia Amos along with a block by James and Sechrist for a 7-1 lead. After the Catawba Indians scored twice to make it 7-3, UVA Wise won seven of the next eight rallies, with James,
Skye Williams and Amos recording kills before
Abigail Curtis served an ace for a 14-4 advantage. The Catawba Indians trimmed it to 15-7, but a service error gave the serve back to the Highland Cavaliers, and
Skye Williams served five straight points as Petersen and Brandon supplied kills and Brandon and Petersen combined on a block in a 6-0 run to 21-7. The Cavaliers kept the margin in double figures from there, reached set point on James' kill and finished the set 25-10 on Sechrist's service ace.
