ROCK HILL, SC – On the heels of UVA Wise's 35-21 win over Tusculum Saturday afternoon, Highland Cavalier running back
Daniel Thomas has been named the WePlayed Sports South Atlantic Conference Offensive Football Player of the Week.
Conference officials made the announcement on Monday.
Thomas, a sophomore from Middlesboro, Kentucky, ran for 167 yards and three touchdowns on 32 carries in Saturday's win. His first TD came as the Cavs drove down the field on their game-opening drive, scoring on his run from the one yard line. Later he broke open for TDs from the 20 and 19 yard lines.
He currently has 681 yards from 122 carries for the season, an average of 5.6 yards per carry. Thomas also leads the team in TDs with eight. He leads the SAC in yards per game with 136.2 (which ranks fourth nationally) and is second in the SAC in rushing touchdowns. Against Catawba earlier this season he set a new NCAA-era program record for rushing with 256 yards.
This is Thomas' first time earning Player of the Week honors and the first for a Highland Cavalier football player this season. The most recent SAC Player of the Week was
Cooper Wick, who earned Offensive Player of the Week honors last November.
The team will hit the road for their first-ever game at Anderson next Saturday at 2 p.m.
