WISE – The Highland Cavalier baseball team won their fifth South Atlantic Conference series of the year as they split the Saturday doubleheader against Newberry.
The Cavs took game one Friday evening in come-from-behind fashion as they scored four runs in the eighth inning and defeated the Wolves 6-4.

GAME ONE
- Newberry scored first on a RBI single in the second inning. The Cavs answered back in the bottom of the inning when
Morgan Miller was walked, followed by a two run homer by
Jeb Hurst.
- The Cavs scored again in the fourth when Miller doubled and then scored again via a
Nick Badgett single to left field.
- The Wolves howled back in the sixth inning as they had four hits that they converted to five runs to take the 6-3 lead.
- The bottom of the seventh was UVA Wise's turn for a big inning as the Cavs loaded the bases and then scored on a RBI hit by pitch.
Jake Smith then came to the plate and hit his seventh home run of the season, a grand slam, to put the Cavs ahead 8-6.
- The Cavs added an insurance run in the eighth via a Newberry error and the Cavs only allowed one run in the ninth to seal the 9-7 win.
- Badgett was 2-5 with a run and a RBI, while
Joshua Morgan was 2-4, also with a run and a RBI. Smith was 1-4 with four RBI via the grand slam,
Morgan Miller was 1-3 with two runs, and
Jeb Hurst was 1-4 with a run and two RBI.

Nash Bingham earned the win as he threw 2.2 innings in relief, allowing one run off of two hits and striking out four.
Ryan Whitson earned his sixth save of the season as he came in during the ninth inning to close out the game.
GAME TWO
- The Wolves scored thrice in the top of the third. UVA Wise answered back in the bottom of the inning as
Nick Badgett scored on a single up the middle by
Jacob Boyle.
- Newberry added an insurance run in the fourth and two more in the seventh.
- The Cavs had three hits in the second game, with Boyle,
DJ Dickson, and
Jaden Ruehling accounting for the hits.
UP NEXT
The Cavs will step out of conference for a midweek game against #13/7 Carson-Newman Tuesday at 3 p.m. The Eagles took the South Atlantic Conference series between the two a week ago in Jefferson City, Tennessee.
