Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse | | UVA Wise Athletics

Lacrosse downs Catawba 20-7 on Senior Day For Fourth Straight Win

Sets Up Winner-Takes-All Match at Tusculum on Wednesday With a Conference Tournament Berth on the Line

WISE – It was Senior Day on the Beaty-Richmond Field at Carl Smith Stadium, and the UVA Wise lacrosse team sent out their seniors with a huge 20-7 win over Catawba.

The win was the fourth straight for the Cavs and marks the third time this season (and third in the last four games) that the team has reached the 20 goal mark.

The Cavs are still sixth in the South Atlantic Conference standings with one game to go. The top six teams go on to the conference tournament and the top five teams have already qualified with games Wednesday being used to determine final seeding. So there are now three teams all vying for the sixth and final spot. Tusculum and LMU are both one game behind UVA Wise in seventh, with the Cavs playing at Tusculum Wednesday and LMU playing at Emory & Henry. UVA Wise holds the head-to-head tiebreaker with LMU, and LMU holds it over Tusculum. So the Cavs control their own destiny heading into the final game of the regular season. Win and they are in.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP
Result: UVA Wise 20, Catawba 7
Records: UVA Wise (8-8, 5-5 SAC); Limestone (6-9, 3-7 SAC)
Location: Wise, VA | Beaty-Richmond Field at Carl Smith Stadium

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Issie Brown scored first for the Cavs as she made a juke move and put it past the goalie with 14:32 remaining. The teams then traded free position goals over the next seven minutes before Brown took a pass from Abby Stoffelen and put the Cavs up 3-2. With a little over a minute left, Kaylin Harris caused a Catawba turnover just inside their own offensive end and sprinted it back 70 yards on a solo fast break for her first career goal. Logen Davis tacked on another goal eight seconds later and gave the Cavs the 5-2 lead after one quarter.
- UVA Wise would score twice more before Catawba found the back of the net again, and then score three more via a pair from Noley Hiller and one from Logen Davis before Catawba scored twice before the end of the half. UVA Wise led 10-5 at halftime.
- The Cavs would explode for eight unanswered goals, seven in the third quarter, and score twice more to close out the game. Catawba would hit two late goals to make the final margin 20-7.
- Charlize Skepple and Grace Virginia Deal led Catawba with two goals apiece.

GETTING WISE
- Noley Hiller led the team with five goals. That ties her career high with the five she scored at Emory & Henry on April 2 and marks the twelfth career hat trick for the sophomore.
- Logen Davis had four goals and an assist, tying her career record for goals and marking the ninth hat trick of her career.
- Issie Brown had her second career hat trick as the Adelaidean tied her career high with three goals.
- Grace Golatt had her 14th career hat trick with three goals in the game, as the senior edged closer to the 100 goal mark for her career. She now has 97 heading into her final regular season game.
- Kaylea Paterson had a goal and four assists for five points. The assists were a new career high, while the points tied her previous career mark set on three other occasions.
- Chloe Huston led the team as she won a game-high and career-high eight draws. Three Cavs (Taryn Moreno, Issie Brown, and Lauren Cole) led the team with three ground balls apiece. Moreno led the team with four caused turnovers.
- Addie Donalson earned the win as she played the first half in cage, only allowing five goals with one save. Katie Michaels played the second half, allowing two goals with two saves.
- The win extends the Cavs' win streak to four, the longest since they opened the season with four straight wins.
- The win improves the Cavs to 5-1 all time vs. Catawba, with four of those wins being in Wise. The lone loss was in 2022 in Salisbury.

UP NEXT
