WISE – UVA Wise and Tusculum met for the first of two times this season Tuesday evening, with the Pioneers coming from behind in the seventh inning and holding off the Cavs in the ninth to claim the 7-5 win on the Burchell Stallard Baseball Field.
The two teams are not facing off in South Atlantic Conference play this season, so they are playing a mid-week game at each site. UVA Wise will play at Pioneer Park on April 15.
Eight Cavalier hitters registered a hit in the loss, with doubles by
Bernard Creque,
Matt Frye,
DJ Dickson, and
Joshua Morgan all hitting doubles.
Clayton Lanser took the loss as he entered in relief and was the pitcher of record for the Cavs. Mason Huffstickler earned the win for the Pioneers..

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Tusculum took the lead in the first inning via a RBI single.
-The Cavs took the 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second as runs scored via a bases loaded walk, a groundout to the pitcher with bases loaded, and a single to the shortstop.
-After the Pioneers added a run in the fourth, Creque singled to right field to score
Nick Badgett and put UVA Wise ahead 4-2.
-Tusculum added a run in the fifth, seventh, eighth, and two in the ninth to take the 7-4 lead. Dickson scored on a
Matt Frye single to cut the lead to 7-5 and the Cavs had the bases loaded with two outs, but the Pioneers forced an infield pop fly to end the game.
UP NEXT
UVA Wise will continue their home stand as they return to South Atlantic Conference action this weekend as Anderson comes to town. Currently, the games are scheduled for a Friday single game at 4 p.m., followed by a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. Because of forecasted rain and a chance of snow later this week in the Wise area, those dates and times may change.
