WISE -- History was made Saturday afternoon on the Jim & Betty Humphreys Tennis Complex as the UVA Wise men's tennis team not only picked up a key South Atlantic Conference victory with their 4-1 win over Anderson, but the win was the first-ever by the Cavs over the Trojans since UVA Wise joined the SAC.
In doubles play,
Yi-Hsuan Chen and
Chathurya Nilaweera won at the first flight, but the Trojans won 6-3 in flight three and captured the doubles point with the 7-6 (7-5) win in the second flight.
The Cavs then captured four wins in the singles flights to take the match.
Nilaweera won in the third flight 6-4, 6-4 and Chen won at number five 6-0, 6-1. Daniel Gonzalz Garza then outlasted his opponent in the fourth flight 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 to put the Cavs ahead 3-1.
With three flights remaining and the needing one to win,
Miguel De Rueda soon afterward emerged victorious in a lengthy match that lasted almost as long as the Trojan War as he won 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-4) to seal the victory for the Cavs. The remaining flights then halted per SAC rules.
The Cavs host Lenoir-Rhyne Tuesday afternoon.
