WISE – The UVA Wise baseball team hosted Union University for a four-game series this weekend on the Burchell Stallard Field. The Cavs won the first three, setting a new school record with a 9-0 start to the season, before falling in the final game on Sunday.
The 9-0 start, based on research of available records, is the best in school history.

GAME ONE
- Union scored in the first inning and led until the third when
DJ Dickson hit a three-run homer down the right field line to put UVA Wise ahead 3-1.
- The Bulldogs would score twice in the fifth to tie the game at 3-3.

Nick Badgett would give the Cavs the win with a walk-off single with bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning that scored
Morgan Miller from third.

Bo Trantham picked up the win, his second of the season, as he threw three innings in relief and only allowed one hit.
GAME TWO

Jacob Boyle opened up the game with a grand slam in the first inning that also scored
Jaden Ruehling,
Joshua Morgan, and
DJ Dickson.
- UVA Wise added two more runs in the third inning to make the lead 6-0.
- Union would score a run each in the sixth and seventh innings, but would get no closer.
- Morgan,
Matt Frye, and Boyle had two hits apiece to lead the Cavs, with Boyle leading the team with four RBI. Justin Snyder picked up the win as he allowed one run off of four hits and struck out five Bulldogs.
GAME THREE
- The Cavs scored twice in the first as Badgett and Morgan both crossed the plate.

Jake Smith would add three more to the run total via a three-run home run in the second inning.
- Union scored once in the fourth inning and twice in the fifth, but
Jeb Hurst added an insurance home run in the sixth as the Cavs claimed the 6-3 win.
- Hurst and D.J. Dickson led the team with two hits in the win, while
Houston Sarvis picked up his second win of the season as he only allowed one run off of four hits in 4.2 innings of work.
GAME FOUR
- The final game of the series saw the Bulldogs score 13 runs off of 10 hits while holding the Cavs to three runs.
- Badgett scored in the first inning off a double by Morgan to give the Cavs the lead.
- Union scored twice to take the lead before the Cavs plated two runners in the fourth inning.
- The Bulldogs would explode for eleven runs over the next three innings to had the Cavs their first loss of the season.
UP NEXT
The Cavs will leave the friendly confines of Stallard Field for the first time this season as they travel to Wingate for the South Atlantic Conference opener next weekend. The series begins Friday at 4 p.m. with a single game, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 2: 00 p.m.
