EMORY, VA – UVA Wise improved to 15-3 (5-2 South Atlantic Conference) holding off a late Emory and Henry comeback attempt on Friday afternoon at Porter-DeVault Field, as
Ryan Whitson slammed the door on the 9-8 victory earning his second save of the season. The Cavs improved to 3-1 on the road this season, while the Wasps fell in their home opener.
Eight Cavalier hitters registered a hit in the win, with home runs by
Joshua Morgan,
Jake Smith, and
Jake Weaver.
Spencer Powell earned his first win of the season, firing six strong innings for UVA Wise. Jacob Nester suffered the loss for Emory and Henry.
This win marks the 15
th win in the month of February for the Cavs, a program record.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Cavs scored the first six runs of the game to jump out to a 6-0 lead through five innings
Jacob Boyle had two hits for the Cavs and drove in the first run of the day with an RBI single in the 3
rd inning.

Jeb Hurst extended the lead to 3-0 with his team leading 15
th RBI of the season in the fourth inning.
-The Cavs continued to add to their lead in the 5
th inning via the long ball.
Joshua Morgan belted a solo home run, his third of the year and one batter later
Jake Smith hit his second homerun of the season, extending the Cavalier lead to 6-0.
-Starting Pitcher,
Spencer Powell threw 6 innings to pick up the win, allowing just three runs, all in the sixth inning, while striking out four Wasps.
-UVA Wise added three insurance runs in the 7
th inning when
Morgan Miller singled to left field, followed by a
Jake Weaver two-run homer, his second of the year.

Ryan Whitson entered in the 8
th inning with the score 9-7 and allowed one run, but slammed the door on the Wasps in the 9
th inning to earn his second save of the year.
