Women's Tennis Opens 2025-26 Home Slate With Pair of Wins

WISE – The UVA Wise women's tennis team are undefeated on the season with a pair of wins over Southern Virginia and Milligan Friday and Saturday at the Jim & Betty Humphreys Tennis Complex. Both wins were 7-0 sweeps.

Against Southern Virginia, the Cavs swept all three doubles flights for their first point. Kenzy Abdelaal and Andreea Onitoiu won in the first flight, Constanca Azinhaga and Lucy Cunliffe captured the second flight, and Julana Bastidas Tamayo and Christina Korakopoulou won at #3.

In singles, all wins were in straight sets, with Abelaal and Bastidas sweeping their opponents in the first and fourth flights. At flights two, three, and six Onitoiu, Melissa Lino Airoldi, and Korakopoulou only dropped one set point. Cunliffe at #5 won over her opponent 6-2, 6-1.

On Saturday the team faced former Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Milligan where it was a repeat of Friday's performance with an identical 7-0 result.
Abdelaal and Onitoiu had a hard-fought 6-4 win at #1 doubles, while Cunliffe and Azinhaga won 6-2 at #2. Airoldi and Bastidas cruised to the 6-0 win in the third flight.

In singles, Abdelaal at #1 and Onitoiu at #2 outlasted the Milligan opposition with tiebreaker set wins, while Airoldi won the third flight after her opponent retired. Bastidas won the fourth flight 6-4, 6-2. Azinhaga (6-1, 6-1) and Cunliffe (6-0, 6-0) cruised to wins in the fifth and sixth flights.

The team will close out the Fall portion of their schedule on Oct. 25 when they host former Mountain East Conference rival West Virginia Wesleyan at the Humphreys Complex. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
