WISE – The UVA Wise men's tennis team moved to 2-0 on the season with a pair of wins over Southern Virginia and Milligan Friday and Saturday at the Jim & Betty Humphreys Tennis Complex.
They defeated Southern Virginia 7-0 Friday afternoon and then handed Milligan the 5-2 win on Saturday.
Against Southern Virginia, the Cavs swept all three doubles flights for their first point.
Mustafa Raja and Hsien-Nuo Hsieh at #1 and
Genis Ribas and
Mario Viana de la Torre at #2 all won by 6-1 margins.
Arne Fassbender and
Ege Uzun took the #3 flight in a 7-6 tiebreaker win.
In singles, Ribas won at #1, Raja at #2, Viana de la Torre won in the third flight, Fassbender captured the fourth flight win, Uzun won at #5, and
Miguel Ruiz took the win at number six.
On Saturday the team faced former Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Milligan.
The Buffaloes took the doubles point, though
Daniel Gonzalez Garza and
Miguel De Rueda won at the second flight to deny MC the doubles sweep.
In singles, Chen picked up the win at #1, Gonzalez Garza won at the second flight, and DeRueda came back from one set down to take the second set and tiebreaker set to claim the third flight victory. Cathurya Nilaweera claimed the win in the fourth flight, while Raja won at #6.
The team will close out the Fall portion of their schedule on Oct. 25 when they host former Mountain East Conference rival West Virginia Wesleyan at the Humphreys Complex. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
