WISE – Wingate broke open a close game in the second quarter and went on to capture the 33-0 win over UVA Wise Saturday afternoon.
With all the issues last weekend with travel and outages because of the remnants of Hurricane Helene, this was the first game in two weeks for both teams.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Highland Cavs had two big defensive stands in the first quarter with the first one seeing the Cavs hold the Bulldogs inside the 10-yard line and forcing a turnover on downs. The second on had three big stops at the one-yard line and ended with a field goal by Wingate.
- The Bulldogs then scored on their first drive of the second quarter on a 55-yard pass, but a two-point conversion failed, putting WU ahead 9-0. Later in the quarter they added in another touchdown on a 9-play drive and took a 16-0 lead into the locker room at the half.
- Wingate would add two more scores in the third quarter and a field goal early in the fourth to win the game 33-0.
STATS OF NOTE
- Wingate had 390 yards of offense and held the Cavs to 70. They also had a 21-5 difference in first downs.
- WU's Brooks Bentley was 12-23 for 193 yards and a touchdown. O'Brien Barnett led the Bulldogs in rushing with 12 carries for 107 yards and a touchdown. Carlos Estronza had two catches for 63 yards and a touchdown to lead WU.
- UVA Wise's
Jake Corkren was 14-24 for 71 yards, while
Seth Fischbach led the Cavs with five catches for 37 yards.
Brub Hines III had eight tackles to lead the Cavs.

The Cavs host Anderson next Saturday at 2 p.m. on the Beaty-Richmond Field at Carl Smith Stadium. The game is part of UVA Wise's Homecoming festivities and will feature several special events set in and around the game.
