MEN'S TENNIS ROLLS THROUGH ANOTHER WEEKEND

WISE/SALEM, Va. - UVA Wise men's tennis continues its fantastic season with victories over Milligan University and Roanoke College.

The Buffaloes from Milligan University made the trip to Wise, Va. on Saturday, and the Cavs sent them back to Tennessee empty handed, as UVA Wise took the day with a 4-3 victory.

Doubles play proved crucial in securing the Saturday win for the Cavs in such a close result. UVA Wise swept doubles matches on the day, 6-4, 6-4, and 6-1. The most dominant of these victories came courtesy of freshmen Yi-Hsuan Chen and Daniel Gonzalez Garza as they were responsible for the 6-1 dispatching of the competition.

Singles play was far more tightly contested between the two sides, but a 3-3 split was all UVA Wise needed to take the win.

Daniel Gonzalez Garza started UVA Wise off on the right foot in a match where the personality of each competitor shook the chill out of the cool morning air. The thrilling match ended in a victory for the Cavs over graduate student Kevin Bollmann, 4-6, 6-1, and 6-2. 

Junior Vanja Vojinovic took the next victory for the Cavs in straight sets. Vojinovic's convincing victory came over junior Gabrijel Kajic, 6-1 and 7-6(7-0).

The deciding point for UVA Wise came in a fantastic three set victory by freshman Diego Pedrero. After dropping the first set Pedrero roared back against senior Nathan Smiley to secure the Saturday win for the Cavs, 5-7, 7-6(7-5), and 6-3.

Sunday's match against Roanoke was not quite so tightly contested. The Cavs were able to dispatch of the Maroons easily, 7-0.

In doubles the Cavs handled their business easily in two out of three matches. The lone doubles thriller was won by senior Gustavo Marangoni and freshman Diego Pedrero, 7-6(7-4).

It was a clean sweep for UVA Wise in singles play as well. Yi-Hsuan Chen got things started with a victory over senior Zach Kriebel in match one, 6-2 and 6-1. Diego Pedrero kept things rolling with a win against sophomore Federico Maccari in match two, 6-4 and 6-2.

Match three saw more of the same from the Cavs. Freshman Ayaan Tezabwala defeated fellow freshman Grant Sikes, 6-2 and 6-0. In match four freshman Pierre Djaroueh handled sophomore Julio Marques, 6-1 and 6-3. 

In match five sophomore Arne Fassbender soundly defeated fellow sophomore John-Henry Herrington, 6-4 and 6-0. In match six, to put the finishing touch on a perfect day for tennis, freshman Ege Uzun dispatched junior Hardt Lesko, 6-4 and 6-3.

The quest for a perfect season rolls on for UVA Wise, they face off against Johnson University on Oct. 14 at 12 p.m. in Knoxville, Tenn.
