Box Score 2 BUCKHANNON, W.Va./ FROSTBURG, Md. - The UVA Wise men's tennis team tallied their third win of the season on Friday as they defeated Davis & Elkins college 6-1.
The Cavs took two out of three matches in doubles play and went an impressive five for six in their singles matches.
In doubles the pairing of freshmen, Yi-Hsuan Chen and Daniel Gonzalez Garza, came out of a tight 7-5 set victorious. Meanwhile the duo of Vanja Vojinovic and Pierre Djaroueh logged a clean sweep of their opponents, scoring a 6-0 victory and securing the doubles point for UVA Wise.Â
In singles play the Cavs continued to impress as they recorded straight set victories in each of the first five matches.
In matches one and two the talented freshmen for UVA Wise carried their strong play over from doubles. Yi-Hsuan Chen defeated Davis & Elkins freshman Duarte Correia 6-2 and 6-2, while Daniel Gonzalez Garza defeated sophomore Filippo Buffo 6-0 and 6-1.
In matches three and four the Cavs continued to take care of business. Sophomore Miguel De Rueda successfully faced off with Davis & Elkins senior Vinicius Azeredo 6-2 and 6-3, while junior Vanja Vojinovic took care of sophomore Anthony Martins 6-4 and 6-3.
Matches five and six were far and away the most tightly contested in the run of play Friday. Match five saw UVA Wise senior Gustavo Marangoni defeat Santiago Ordonez 6-3 and 7-6 via tiebreaker. The lone singles loss on the day was a thriller, as freshman Diego Pedrero lost a decisive third set 10-8 to fellow freshman Mauro Cupelli.
The second contest of the weekend resulted in yet another Cavalier victory, their fourth of the season, by a score of 5-2 over Frostburg State on Saturday.Â
UVA Wise got out of the gate slowly against the Bobcats as they dropped two out of three doubles matches to give the point to Frostburg.
The Cavs lone doubles win came courtesy of freshmen Diego Pedrero and Ayaan Tezabwala as they defeated their opponents by a score of 6-4.
UVA Wise bounced back from their doubles defeat in dramatic fashion as the day moved into singles play. The Cavs put on a show, taking five out of six matches, to score a second consecutive victory on the road.
Match one saw a valiant effort by Yi-Hsuan Chen fall just short in a thrilling third set where Frostburg sophomore Cole Alcala secured the Bobcats lone singles point, 7-6, 3-6, and 10-7.
The rest of the day came up all Cavs, as matches two through six all resulted in UVA Wise wins.Â
In match two Daniel Gonzalez Garza got things rolling by defeating sophomore German Diaz in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-1. Match three resulted in another straight set victory for the Cavs, this time courtesy of Miguel De Rueda, 7-6 and 6-2 over freshman Viktor Boban.
In match four Vanja Vojinovic defeated freshman Peter Barun, 6-2 and 6-1. In match five Gustavo Marangoni handled his business against sophomore Noah Fisher, 6-1 and 6-2. Another pair of straight set victories for UVA Wise.
Match six was the lone Cavalier win to go the distance in this contest, as Arne Fassbender defeated freshman Field Myatt in a close one, 6-2, 4-6, and 6-3.
A successful road swing, with victories on back to back days, and the Cavs men's tennis squad vault themselves to 4-0 on the season.Â
UVA Wise men's tennis will be back in action for another road contest, this time against Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, W.Va. on Oct. 1 at 1:30 p.m.Â
