Undefeated at home, Limestone plays host to UVA Wise Saturday in a pivotal South Atlantic Conference contest. The Saints and Cavaliers are two of three teams tied for third place in the Mountain Division with 4-4 league marks. The winner of Saturday's contest will leapfrog the other in the standings but the game has even more importance for the Saints. Limestone dropped a 73-68 decision to UVA Wise earlier this season, meaning a second loss to the Cavaliers would give UVA Wise the tiebreaker at the end of the season. In the first meeting between the two, Quin Byrd (16) and Reagan Kargo (15) accounted for 31 points but UVA Wise controlled the paint by netting 50 points on the interior en route to the victory.
UVA Wise powered through its worst shooting performance of the Jamie Cluesman era Wednesday and came out on top 59-54 over Emory & Henry. The Cavs made just 26.8 percent of their field goal attempts in the win but the team forced 24 Wasps' turnovers and converted the miscues into 24 points. Junior Nia Vanzant netted a game-best 21 points while registering a career-high seven steals. Over the last three games, Vanzant is averaging 20.3 points and 5.3 steals per game. The guard is quickly approaching a program record as she enters the weekend with 1,390 points, just 30 points shy of the NCAA Division II program-era scoring record 1,420 that is currently held by Taylor Sandidge. As a team, UVA Wise is playing its best ball of the season, having won five of its last six games. Team defense has spearheaded the solid play as in each win, Cluesman's crew has held the opposition to 68 points or less. In the last three victories, opponents have failed to crack 60 points. Rim protection played a big role in the defensive effort as UVA Wise ranks third nationally in blocks per game at 5.8. Sophomore Kaitlin Bailey has been the team's top shot blocker as her 46 blocks are the most by any NCAA Division II player this winter.
