WISE, VA — the UVA Wise women's tennis team started their fall season with a bang this afternoon, sweeping the Lynchburg Hornets by a score of 7-0 at the Jim & Betty Humphreys Tennis Complex.
The five new faces on the women's Cavalier squad proved their dominance on the court, as freshman duo Constanca Azinhaga and Amelia Monteith took down their opponents Elizabeth and Grace Teefy by a score of 6-1 in #1 Doubles.
The success didn't stop there — as new Cavaliers Lucy Cunliffe and Antonella Campodonico came into the #2 Doubles spot with a 6-2 score against Ashley Hair and Lara Kara's of the Hornets.
In #3 Doubles, junior Sarah Moore and freshman Madison Ramey overpowered Lynchburg's Jordan Ottaviano and Reese McAtee by a score of 6-1.
In singles play, Azinhaga was placed in the #1 spot and easily took down opponent E. Teefey in two identical 6-2 score sets. Campodonico persevered against Lynchburg's Hair in the #2 spot, winning the first set 6-2, and snagging a closer 6-4 second set.
In the #3 spot, Cunliffe found no trouble against Karrass of the Hornets — grabbing 6-1 and 6-2 victories. In the fourth singles matchup, Monteith held her opponent G. Teefey to only one game in each set (6-1, 6-1).
In #5 Singles, veteran Emily Conn was amongst her teammates in the winner's circle as she also took down her Hornet opponent Ottaviano by scores of 6-1 each.
In the final #6 matchup, Sara Nichols held McAtee scoreless in the first set by a quick score of 6-0, and held the last set by a score of 6-2.
"I thought the team came out very focused and played very well," Head Coach Danny Rowland said. "We've been working hard in practice and I'm very proud of each and every one of them."
