WISE, VA — The UVA Wise Cavaliers crept on the Pioneers at various points through the match, but an exemplary offensive performance from Tusculum's Emiah Burrowes hoisted her team to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-15) win.
Burrowes secured a match-high nine kills for Tusculum (2-5,2-2 SAC) in the win, but UVA Wise (3-4, 0-3 SAC) hitter Kaylee Scarce held her own — once again leading her team with eight kills on the day.
Over the seven matches of the season, Scarce has snagged the team-leading amount of kills in all matches but one (@ Concord).
The Cavs never let the Pioneers take a breather in the first set, putting up 11 kills against Tusculum's nine. Yet, Tusculum outscored the Cavs in hitting percentage in the first set 0.219 to 0.050. Adison Minor put up a solid four kills in the first set effort while Morgan Blevins and Cassidy Farley each put up a block, but a late Pioneer run led by Hayley Stull linked together a 25-21 win that barely snuck away from Cavalier grip.
In the second set, four consecutive UVA Wise miscues put the Pioneers in good shape early on with a 13-8 lead. Scarce held the Cavaliers in the game with six slams, but Carli Pigza's defensive outing defended a 25-18 Tusculum win.
In the third, the Cavaliers struggled defensively and couldn't recover against a 10-kill showing from the Pioneers. Tusculum fought off the Cavaliers in a 25-15 final set win.
Freshman Bailey Conner racked up a career-high 10 digs in the match. Freshman teammate Piper Suddeth also had a career-high day, securing 11 assists.
The Cavaliers head to Carson-Newman University on Sep. 16 for their next matchup, with first serve slated at 6:00 p.m.
