NEWBERRY, S.C., GAFFNEY, S.C.— The UVA Wise women's tennis team ran into a buzzsaw this weekend against SAC opponents, falling to the Newberry Wolves and Coker Cobras by scores of 7-0 and 5-2.
The UVA Wise Cavaliers (7-14, 0-8 SAC) had their No. 1 duo Liza Akimenko and Katya Akimenko face Newberry's Zulay Castaneda and Nastassia Chamoun, and came out on top in the tiebreaker by a score of 8-6.
In No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, however, the Wolves took the wins by 6-2 and 6-0.
L. Akimenko began singles play in the No. 1 spot against Casteneda and forced a tiebreaker after each side won a set. Castenada came out victorious and took the match after winning 11-9 against the Cavalier.
The Wolves then went on to sweep the Cavaliers in singles play. Sara Nichols of the Cavs fought hard against Rebecca Gibbons, but eventually fell by a score of 6-4.
On the next day, the Cavaliers put up a strong effort against the Coker Cobras but fell by a score of 5-2.
K. Akimenko and L. Akimenko added to their duo success as they beat Jessica Binzari and Angelina Krieg by a score of 6-3. Sarah Moore and Sara Nichols were also able to snag a win, as the Cavalier duo beat Khushi Agarwal and Katherin Matthews by a score of 6-2.
In singles play, No. 1 L. Akimenko battled Binzari but eventually fell by a final tiebreaking 7-5 set.
The only other win for the Cavaliers would be from Emily Conn, who beat opponent Matthews by scores of 6-0, 6-1.
The women's tennis team heads back home on April 10 to face Mars Hill in a 2:00 PM matchup in Wise, Va.
