NO. 2 WINGATE SWEEPS UVA WISE

WINGATE, N.C. - - No. 2 Wingate (31-3, 13-1 SAC) pushed its home record to 19-0 with a doubleheader sweep of visiting UVA Wise (13-22, 3-12 SAC) Saturday. The Bulldogs won game one 19-2 before rallying to win game two 6-5 to complete a three-game series sweep of the Cavaliers.

GAME BY GAME

GAME ONE

EARLY RUNS CARRY BULLDOGS

Wingate scored three runs in the first, four in the second, three in the third, three in the fourth and three in the fifth to take a 14-2 after five innings of play.

Sixteen of the Bulldogs' 20 hits came during the first five frames as six players finished with multiple hits.

TAYLOR HOMERS

UVA Wise scored its two runs on a two-run homer from Clay Taylor in the fourth inning.

DOTSON STAYS UNDEFEATED

Josh Dotson stayed undefeated (4-0) on the mound for Wingate as he tossed 6 2/3 innings of two-run ball. The hurler fanned nine, walked one and issued a single walk in a 98-pitch effort.

BOX SCORE NOTES

DJ Dickson and Tyler Campbell had two hits each for the Cavaliers who finished with eight hits as a team. Devin Mathis tossed 1 2/3 innings of scoreless ball out of the bullpen while striking out a pair in defeat.

Andrew Motsinger, Logan McNeely, Mitch Farris and Brett Adams had three hits each for the Bulldogs. As a team, Wingate recorded six extra-base hits.

GAME TWO

CAVS GET EARLY LEAD

Brandon Costa's crew jumped out to a 4-0 lead after their first trip to the plate in game two. In the inning, UVA Wise received a three-run triple from DJ Dickson before he scored on a wild pitch.

KELLIHER PLATES FIFTH RUN

Shortstop JoJo Kelliher gave the Cavs a 5-0 lead when he singled home Dickson in the third, Dickson had doubled previously in the inning.

WINGATE BATTLES BACK

A four-run third inning got the Bulldogs back in the game. In the frame, Motsinger doubled in a run, Justin Guy lined a two-run homer and Farris doubled in a run.

FARRIS TIES IT/KING GIVES 'DOGS LEAD

Farris tied the game in the fifth with a solo homer before Wingate took its first lead of the game on a Seaver King knocked in the go-ahead run.

LAST INNING PUSH

UVA Wise would get the leadoff man in the seventh, its final trip to the plate. However, Wingate reliever Sam Brodersen would earn his sixth save of the season by retiring the next three hitters.

BOX SCORE NOTES

Dickson went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored while Campbell picked up a pair of hits as part of a seven-hit effort for the Cavs.

UP NEXT

UVA Wise is slated to play a non-conference doubleheader at home Tuesday against King University. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. from Stallard Field.
