WISE, VA — The UVA Wise women's tennis team couldn't pull through a win against Tusculum, falling to the Pioneers by a 6-1 score on Wednesday, April 13 at Jim and Betty Humphreys Tennis Complex.
The UVA Wise Cavaliers (7-16, 0-10 SAC) started strong in their No. 1 doubles matchup, with Cavaliers Katya Akimenko and Liza Akimenko forcing a tiebreaker with a 7-6 win. In the tiebreaker, the Akimenko sisters took the determining duel 7-3.
Tusculum (14-6, 9-4 SAC) turned the match in their favor as Emilie Hansen and Rory Church took down Sarah Moore and Lillian Morris by a score of 6-1, and Leonie Floeth and Valentina Loretz beat Grace Hall and Sara Nichols by a 6-2 score.
L. Akimenko aided the Cavaliers in a 6-4, 6-3 win against Elodie Baechler to start singles play.
Tusculum recovered quickly as the rest of the singles matchups ended in Pioneer favor. Notably, V. Loretz was the only Pioneer to force a full shutout with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Moore.
The Cavaliers took the 6-1 loss, and now sit at a 7-16 record overall.
The Cavaliers are back home to face Catawba College on Thursday, April 14.
