CATAWBA SQUEEZES PAST CAVALIERS IN 4-3 BATTLE

WISE, VA — The Catawba Indians women's tennis team barely squeezed by the UVA Wise women' team today, as the Cavs fell 4-3 on Thursday, April 14.

Doubles play saw Katya Akimenko and Liza Akimenko dominate once again as they took down Lauren Laughton and Carolina Correia by a score of 6-2. The win puts the Akimenko sisters at a 13-2 record overall, and a 9-2 in conference play.

In the No. 2 slot, Grace Hall and Sarah Nichols couldn't snag the win against Veronica Poliakova and Lena Friedrich, but a Sarah Moore and Lillian Morris win by default gave the Cavs the doubles overall win.

In singles play, L. Akimenko came through with an early win against Poliakova in the No. 1 spot.

Sister K, Akimenko followed, but Laughton was too tough to overcome in a 6-3, 6-1 defeat.

In the No. 3 spot. Correia held Anna Hupperten scoreless in a 6-0, 6-0 performance.

In the fourth matchup of the day, Friedrich swiped a win from Sarah Moore by scores of 6-2, 6-0.

Next, Merionne Hunt of Catawba and Emily Conn battled as the two forced a tiebreaker. Hunt ended with the victory by a 7-5 determining win.

In the final matchup, Sara Nichols was able to take a win by default.

Catawba finished out the day with a 4-3 victory.
