WINGATE, N.C. - - No. 2 Wingate tied a South Atlantic Conference record by striking out 20 UVA Wise hitters in a 14-2 win at Ron Christopher Stadium Friday evening.
BULLDOGS HAVE BIG FIRST INNING
The defending national champions struck for six runs in the first inning. Logan McNeely and Justin Guy each knocked in a pair in the big frame.
WINGATE EXTENDS LEAD
A two-run double off the bat of Mitch Farris pushed the Wingate lead to 8-0 after two innings of play.
MCCULLOUGH K'S 17
Bulldogs starter Brody McCullough was as good as it gets on the mound. McCullough fanned 17 Cavaliers, allowed just two hits and issued a walk in 6 1/3 innings of work. The 17 strikeouts were the most by a SAC pitcher this season and the second most by any hurler in NCAA Division II this spring.
LEAD GROWS TO DOUBLE DIGITS
Michael Dansky pushed the Wingate lead to 9-0 with an RBI groundout in the fifth before teammate Gehrig Christopher made it a 10-0 affair with a run-producing single later in the frame.
BULLPEN TIES RECORD
The Wingate bullpen would strikeout three more UVA Wise hitters to tie the all-time single-game SAC record for strikeouts in a game with 20. The number ties a mark that was originally set in a game between Carson-Newman and Tusculum in 2015. Tyler Frey added two punchouts with Brent Walls recording the record tying strikeout in the ninth.
UVA WISE GETS ON THE BOARD
An RBI single from Clay Taylor in the eighth and a JoJo Kelliher run-scoring hit in the ninth provided the scoring offense for the Cavaliers.
FOUR-RUN EIGHTH
The hosts scored four times in the eighth inning to provide the winning margin of 14-2; Sean Barrett lined a two-run homer down the left field line to cap the scoring.
BOX SCORE NOTES
DJ Dickson finished with two of UVA Wise's six hits. The freshman scored a run and added a walk in his four plate appearances.
UP NEXT
The schools will wrap up the series with a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 1 p.m.
