WISE, VA — The UVA Wise women's tennis team weren't able to seal a win in their weekend matches vs. Carson Newman and Limestone this weekend, falling 6-1 and 7-0.
VS. CARSON-NEWMAN:
In doubles play, the UVA Wise Cavaliers (7-10, 0-4 SAC) struggled against powerful Carson Newman (9-2, 3-9 SAC) duos at their home courts in Wise, Va.
Liza and Katya Akimenko put up an early Cavalier effort in a 6-2 battle against Natasha Forest and Hannah Price in the No. 1 spot. Following was Sarah Moore and Lillian Moore, who fell 6-1 against Eagles Violetta Khisamova and Julia Speiser. In the final doubles spot, Summer Reeves and Maria Ulloa took down Anna Hupperten and grace Hall of the Cavs by a score of 6-0.
In singles competition, L. Akimenko was the only Cavalier victor in the contest as she took down Reeves by scores of 6-2 and 6-4 in the no. 1 spot.
AT LIMESTONE:
On Sunday, the Cavalier squad traveled to Gaffney, S.C. to face the Saints in their second conference battle of the weekend.
Limestone (6-5, 2-3 SAC) came out strong against the Cavaliers, blanking them by a score of 7-0.
In doubles play, Akimenko sisters battled against Alexandra Dolfi and Anna Mora in the No. 1 spot and won by a score of 6-4.
In the second doubles matchup, Moore and Morris put up a point in a 6-1 loss to Saints Anamaria KisznerLuca and Sara Valentini.
In the doubles finale, Maris Radu and Felicitas Picinni held Nichols and Conn scoreless, 6-0.
The Saints would go on to snag three singles shutouts (KisznerLuca vs. K. Akimenko, Mora vs. Moore, and Valentini vs. Hall).
L. Akimenko and Dolfi had the hardest-fought battle of the day, as Dolfi would hang on by a thread and beat L. Akimenko by identical scores of 7-6.
