CAVS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER AT CONCORD

ATHENS, W.Va. - - UVA Wise and Concord split a non-conference baseball doubleheader at Anderson Field Wednesday. The host Mountain Lions prevailed in game one 5-3 before the Cavaliers won game two 8-6.

GAME TWO

A four-run third inning from UVA Wise would prove to be pivotal. The Cavaliers would score all of their runs in the frame with two outs as Gavin Birkhimer scored on a wild pitch, Justin Reed singled home Evan Stanley, Cole Harness knocked in JoJo Kelliher and Jude Drzemiecki was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to account for the quartet of runs to give Brandon Costa's squad a 4-1 advantage.

Concord struck for a single run in the home third on an Anthony Stehlin run-scoring single before a two-run fifth by UVA Wise in the fifth pushed the lead to 6-2 as Drzemiecki belted a two-run homer.

The Mountain Lions bounced back with a three-run frame in the home half of the fifth inning. A strikeout began the inning but a wild pitch allowed Hunter Steel to reach first base. After consecutive hitters reached to load the bases, Stehlin lined a two-run- single to cut the deficit to 6-4. Ryan Whitson would then take the mound for UVA Wise and the hurler would induce a ground ball double play for the first two outs of the inning to make it a 6-5 affair before getting out of the jam.

A JoJo Kelliher single plated Clay Taylor in the sixth to make it 7-5 before Stanley's RBI single made it 8-5 going to the home seventh.

In the seventh, Concord put up a fight with two outs. A Rylee Nicholas RBI single cut the lead to two and got the winning run to the plate only to see Cavalier hurler Nash Bingham strikeout Kyle Keenan for the game's final out to seal the win.

BOX SCORE NOTES

Stanley lined a game-high three hits in the win while Drzemiecki knocked in three and scored twice. JoJo Kelliher, Reed and Harness all had two hits for UVA Wise. On the mound, Whitson fired two innings of scoreless ball to pick up the mound win while Bingham earned the save.

GAME ONE

UVA Wise took a 2-0 lead in the opener before Concord came to bat. A Harness RBI single and an error staked the guests to what proved to be a short lived lead.

A pair of sacrifice fly outs by the Mountain Lions tied the game in the home first before a two-run homer off the bat of Nicholas put the hosts up for good in the second inning.

The Cavs would get within a run on a double by Taylor in the third but the Mountain Lions would take on a fifth run in the sixth to secure the 5-3 triumph.

BOX SCORE NOTES

Justin Carden earned the win on the mound by firing two scoreless innings of relief; Stehlin fanned a pair in a perfect seventh to earn the save.

UVA Wise was limited to three hits in the game with Bret Roberts, Harness and Taylor collecting on each.
