NEWBERRY, S.C. - - No. 18 Newberry ran its way to a doubleheader sweep over visiting UVA Wise at the Smith Road Baseball Complex Sunday. The Wolves stole a combined 16 bases in the doubleheader as they defeated the Cavaliers by scores of 15-3 and 8-0.
GAME ONE
WOLVES' MISCUES SPARK CAVS
UVA Wise came to bat trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the second but Newberry mistakes would soon aid the visitors to a lead. Clay Taylor walked to lead off the inning before JoJo Kelliher walked to put two men on with nobody out. Following a balk and a wild pitch, the Cavs had tied the game. An error would give UVA Wise the lead before an RBI ground out from Bret Roberts put Brandon Costa's team in front 3-1.
INCHING CLOSER AND TYING IT UP
Newberry cut the deficit to a run when Kade Fairthcloth singled home Henry Gibson in the fourth inning. An inning later, the Wolves tied the game when Johnathan Velez scampered home on a wild pitch.
BUSTING IT OPEN
The Wolves would send 11 hitters to the plate in the sixth inning and seven would score as the hosts broke the game open. In the frame, Faircloth, Cooper Gentry, Braylin Marine and Gibson all had an RBI while Newberry added three more runs on a pair of UVA Wise errors to take a 10-3 lead.
PLAYING ADD ON
The hosts added a single run on a Velez RBI double in the seventh before a two-run triple by Zane Tarrance highlighted a four-run ninth to provide the 15-3 winning margin.
BOX SCORE NUGGETS
Kyle Baker pitched four scoreless innings of relief for the Wolves. As a team, Newberry swiped 10 stolen bases and produced four extra-base hits.
The Wolves lined 13 hits with Gibson and Velez finishing with three hits each. As a club, the Cavs tallied three hits; Cole Harness, Kelliher and Colby Welborn had one hit each in the loss.
GAME TWO
RUNNING WOLVES GO ON TOP
Newberry scored the game's first run without a hit. Tarrance walked, moved to second on a wild pitch, stole third and came home on a throwing error. Later in the frame, Marine legged out an infield single, stole second, moved to third on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly to put the Wolves up 2-0.
THREE IN THE SECOND
The hosts added to the lead in the second as Velez doubled home a pair before later stealing third and coming home on a sacrifice fly to put his squad in front 5-0.
THREE IN THE FOURTH
Newberry continued to tack on with a three-run fourth frame. Faircloth singled in a run, stole second and then scored on a Jomar Lugo base hit. Lugo would score the third run of the frame when he came on via an error.
BOX SCORE NUGGETS
Ethan Lebron picked up the mound win. The left-hander did not allow a base runner until the fifth inning and finished his day with a 99-pitch, complete game, two-hitter.
UVA Wise committed four errors in the game and allowed six stolen bases. The Cavs picked up two hits, one each from D'Sean Prinkleton and Shyheim Pannell.
NEXT UP
UVA Wise's 21-game season-opening road trip will conclude next weekend when Lincoln Memorial visits Stallard Field Friday for the Cavs' home opener.
